Chapter 6 - The Billionaire's Blindness

The footsteps coming down the concrete stairs were heavy, uneven, and laced with growing panic.
"Isabella?" William’s voice echoed down the shaft again, sounding far more strained and desperate than it ever did when he was standing before the cameras in the ballroom.
Emma pulled Ethan back into the deep shadow beside the ventilation unit, holding her finger to her lips to signal absolute silence.
A moment later, William Sterling appeared at the bottom of the stairs. He was still wearing his custom Tom Ford tuxedo, but his bow tie was undone and hanging loosely around his neck, his shirt collar damp with sweat. He looked around the dim subterranean hallway with wide, bewildered eyes, clutching his smartphone in one hand.
"Ethan?" William called out, his voice cracking slightly. "Ethan, are you down here?"
Ethan looked up at Emma, his eyes shining with unshed tears. Without waiting for permission, the little boy broke away from the shadows and ran out into the open corridor.
"Dad!"
William spun around, his breath catching in his throat as his son collided with his waist. For a second, the powerful billionaire stood paralyzed, staring down at the boy as if he were looking at a ghost.
"Ethan?" William whispered, dropping to his knees and wrapping his arms around his son so tightly his knuckles turned white. "Oh, my God... Ethan, where have you been? Isabella said you were in Maine! She showed me photos—"
"She lied, Dad!" Ethan sobbed into his father's tuxedo jacket. "She locked me down there! In the dark! She told me you didn't care about me!"
William’s face twisted with a mixture of immense relief and sudden, violent confusion. He pulled back, holding Ethan by the shoulders. "Locked you down here? What are you talking about? Isabella would never—"
"She did, Mr. Sterling," a calm, resolute voice said from the shadows.
Emma stepped out from behind the ventilation unit, her posture straight, her yellow cleaning gloves still on her hands. In her pocket, her fingers rested securely against the spine of Isabella’s black leather journal.
William looked up, his brow furrowing into a dark, defensive scowl as he recognized his head housekeeper. "Emma? What is the meaning of this? Why are you down here with my son? Security told me you were scheduled to work the ballroom reception—"
"Security doesn't know everything, Mr. Sterling," Emma interrupted, her voice cutting through his aristocratic confusion with absolute authority. "And your new wife knows a great deal more than she has ever let on."
Before William could explode in anger at her boldness, a light, musical voice drifted down from the top of the stairwell.

"William? Darling, are you down there? The guests are asking for the cake cutting..."
