Chapter 6 - The Obsidian Manor

By dawn, the blizzard had blanketed the city in a pristine, deceptive layer of white silence.

A sleek, black armored SUV idled quietly outside the clinic doors. Two men in dark tactical gear stood guard, their faces impassive as Mara, Emma, and Dante emerged from the basement. Dante walked with a stiff, controlled gait, his arm bound tightly against his chest beneath a fresh, heavy overcoat.

“Where are we going?” Emma asked, peering out the tinted windows as the SUV pulled away from the curb.

“Home, for now,” Dante said, glancing at Mara, who sat rigidly on the opposite side of the leather interior, staring out at the snow-choked streets.

Forty minutes later, the SUV passed through a pair of towering wrought-iron gates guarded by private security cameras and biometric scanners. They entered the grounds of the Obsidian Manor—a sprawling, fortress-like estate perched on a rocky bluff overlooking the freezing Atlantic.

The estate was a masterpiece of gothic architecture and modern security. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter, and high-frequency jammers shielded the property from wiretaps and drone surveillance.

As the vehicle came to a halt, the door was opened by an elderly butler named Marcus, whose posture was as rigid as a Marine general’s.

“Mr. Blackwood,” Marcus said, his eyes widening slightly at the sight of Dante’s bandaged shoulder. “We feared the worst.”

“Death is currently too busy, Marcus,” Dante replied smoothly, stepping out and offering a hand to help Emma down.

Mara stepped out into the crisp morning air, taking in the sheer scale of the fortress. It was safe, yes—perhaps the safest place in the entire state. But it was also a golden cage.

“You brought us into a fortress,” Mara said, crossing her arms as she faced Dante on the stone portico. “What’s the price?”

Dante stopped, turning to face her. The morning sun broke through the gray clouds, casting sharp shadows across his face.

“The price is cooperation,” Dante said evenly. “Until I flush out the traitors in my inner circle who tried to assassinate me and frame your husband, you and Emma stay here. Under my direct protection.”

“And if I refuse?”

Dante stepped closer, his presence overwhelming, filling the space between them with an electric, undeniable tension.

“You can walk out those gates right now,” Dante whispered, his voice dangerously low. “And within twenty minutes, the men who threatened you in the alley will finish what they started. Choose wisely, Mrs. Hayes.”

Mara glared at him, hating the fact that he was entirely right. She didn't blink, refusing to let him intimidate her.

“I don't need your protection, Mr. Blackwood,” Mara said, her voice ringing clear and sharp across the courtyard. “I need a partner who will help me bury the bastards who killed my husband.”

A slow, dangerous smile touched the corner of Dante’s lips—the first genuine expression she had seen on him.

“Consider the partnership accepted.”
