Chapter 7 - The Siege of the Obsidian Manor

Three days passed in a tense, calculated equilibrium.

The Obsidian Manor functioned like a clockwork military installation. Marcus ensured Emma was looked after, providing her with art supplies, a temporary tutor, and a secure suite next to Mara’s master quarters. Meanwhile, Dante operated from his fortified home office, coordinating his loyal faction, cutting off financial leaks, and hunting for the mole who had sold him out to the rival syndicate led by Victor Vance—the man pulling the strings behind the alley thugs.

Mara, however, refused to play the role of the helpless refugee.

She spent her hours in the estate’s extensive digital archive, cross-referencing Elias’s construction notes with municipal tax records, tracking the shell companies that had funneled kickbacks to Vance’s associates. Her sharp bookkeeper's mind sliced through corporate disguises with surgical precision.

On the fourth night, the silence was shattered.

At 2:14 AM, the estate’s perimeter alarms shrieked. Red emergency lights bathed the grand hallways in an ominous crimson glow.

In the master suite, Mara bolted upright. She grabbed the heavy tactical flashlight Dante had given her and rushed to Emma’s room. Emma was already awake, curled up under the heavy quilt, her eyes wide with fear.

“Mom? What’s happening?”

“Stay in the closet, sweetheart. Lock the door from the inside and don't open it for anyone unless it’s me or Marcus,” Mara commanded, her voice calm, leaving no room for argument.

Before Emma could protest, Mara closed the reinforced oak door, turning the heavy deadbolt.

She stepped out into the hallway just as Dante came around the corner. He had already shrugged off his jacket, a tactical vest strapped tightly over his black shirt, a suppressed automatic pistol held low and ready in his right hand. His injured shoulder was wrapped tightly, but his movements were fluid and lethal.

“Vance’s men,” Dante said grimly, his eyes scanning the corridor. “They bypassed the outer gates. They have insiders.”

“How many?” Mara asked, stepping up beside him.

“At least a dozen. They’re coming through the west wing.” Dante paused, looking down at her with a flash of frustration. “I told you to stay in the secure zone.”

“I’m not a piece of furniture you can store in a closet, Blackwood,” Mara snapped, pulling a heavy steel fire extinguisher from its wall bracket. “Which way are they moving?”

Dante stared at her for a split second, then nodded once. “Stairwell B. Cover my flank.”

What followed was twenty minutes of pure, chaotic warfare.

The quiet luxury of the Obsidian Manor became a battlefield of shattering glass, echoing gunfire, and tactical smoke. Dante moved through the corridors like a ghost, neutralizing threats with chilling efficiency. But as two mercenaries flanked him from an intersecting hallway, Mara didn't hesitate. She hurled the heavy steel fire extinguisher down the corridor, catching the first man squarely in the chest and sending him crashing into his partner.

Dante fired twice, ending the threat instantly.

He turned to Mara, his chest heaving, a fierce, primal admiration burning in his eyes.

“You’re insane, Mara Hayes,” Dante muttered, grabbing her arm and pulling her behind a reinforced concrete pillar as a burst of automatic gunfire chewed up the mahogany paneling above them.

“And you’re bleeding again,” Mara replied coldly, pointing at the fresh crimson stain spreading across his shoulder bandage.

Dante let out a dark laugh, reloading his weapon with one hand. “Then let’s finish this quickly.”
