Chapter 9 - The Summit at City Hall

That afternoon, the steps of New York City Hall were packed with journalists, news vans, and corporate executives whispering anxiously among themselves.

Inside the grand chamber, the Board of Directors of Blackwood Industries sat at the elevated mahogany horseshoe desk, murmuring conspiracy theories about Dante’s sudden absence.

Victor Vance sat in the front row, wearing an expensive tailored suit, a smug, venomous smile plastered across his face. He had already drafted the press release announcing the dissolution of Dante’s executive powers.

At precisely 2:00 PM, the heavy oak double doors at the back of the chamber swung open with a resounding bang.

Absolute silence fell over the room.

Dante Blackwood walked down the central aisle. He wore a flawless charcoal suit, his shoulders squared, his posture radiating untouchable, sovereign power. There was no sign of his injury, no weakness in his stride.

And walking right beside him, holding his hand with unshakeable poise, was Mara Hayes. She wore a striking, elegant black wool coat, her head held high, her dark eyes scanning the corrupt faces of the men who had tried to destroy her family.

Gasps rippled through the press gallery. Flashbulbs exploded in a blinding wall of white light.

Victor Vance’s smile vanished instantly, his face turning the color of ash.

Dante stepped up to the central podium, his deep, commanding voice echoing off the marble dome of the chamber.

“Gentlemen,” Dante began, his voice cutting through the silence like a razor. “I hear there were rumors that my seat was vacant.”

An elderly board member stood up, stuttering slightly. “Mr. Blackwood... given the recent... disturbances, the board has convened to discuss—"

“The board will sit down and listen,” Dante interrupted, his tone leaving zero room for argument.

Dante turned slightly, looking down at Mara, before addressing the entire city through the array of live microphones broadcasting to millions of homes.

“For too long, cowards have operated in the shadows of this city,” Dante declared, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “They thought they could buy silence with kickbacks, and bury truth with murder. They targeted an innocent man—Elias Hayes—and tried to silence his family.”

Vance half-stood from his seat, panic leaking into his voice. “This is an outrage! He’s rambling about baseless conspiracies—”

“Silence, Vance,” Dante barked, raising a single finger.

At that exact moment, the massive electronic display screen behind the board of directors flickered to life. Projected in high-definition clarity were the decrypted bank records, the municipal audit reports proving the concrete fraud, and the audio confessions of Vance’s arrested mercenaries detailing the assassination of Elias Hayes.

The press corps erupted into a frenzy of shouted questions and flashing cameras.

Dante turned back to the podium, placing his hand firmly over Mara’s.

“Effective immediately,” Dante announced, his eyes fixed on the camera lenses recording every word for the entire nation, “all assets of Blackwood Industries are restructuring under a new charter. And before this city, before the law, and before my enemies, I formally and permanently claim Mara Hayes as my wife and queen, and her daughter Emma as my own flesh and blood. Any person, corporation, or syndicate that moves against them answers directly to me.”

Victor Vance stumbled backward out of his row, his hands shaking as federal agents in dark suits stepped out from the gallery shadows, placing handcuffs on his wrists.

The game was over. The empire had a new ruler, and she stood right beside him.
