Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The grand dining hall of the De Luca estate was illuminated by a massive crystal chandelier that cast a golden glow across the long mahogany table.

Sitting on one side was Don Antonio Moretti, an aging, ruthless mobster with silver hair, pockmarked skin, and eyes like a viper. Surrounding him were six of his most trusted enforcers, all wearing heavy overcoats.

On the other side sat Marco De Luca, flanked only by Frank and two guards.

Unknown to the Moretti family, tucked high above the dining hall in the hidden acoustic balcony—a historical feature of the mansion originally built for orchestral musicians—sat Elena, Matteo, and Luca. The balcony was pitch black, completely hidden behind thick velvet curtains, but it possessed an incredible acoustic design that amplified every whisper spoken in the room below.

Elena held both boys’ hands tightly, her heart pounding in her throat. She had begged Marco not to do this, but Marco had insisted: “If there is a trap, my sons will hear it before my eyes can see it.”

Down below, Don Moretti poured himself a glass of wine with an exaggerated, friendly laugh.

“Marco, my boy!” Moretti rasped, his voice sounding like gravel being ground together. “It’s been too long. We need to settle this harbor dispute once and for all. Why live in tension when we can share the profits?”

“You didn't come here to share profits, Antonio,” Marco said calmly, slicing his steak with precise, rhythmic movements. “You came because your shipments were seized by federal agents last week, and you’re running out of money.”

Moretti’s laugh abruptly died. His face hardened. “You always were an arrogant bastard, De Luca. Just like your father.”

In the dark balcony above, Luca leaned close to Elena’s ear and whispered softly, “The old man’s heart is beating very fast. Thump-thump-thump. He’s scared.”

Matteo tilted his head toward the left side of the table where Moretti’s chief enforcer, a hulking man named Dino, was standing.

“Elena,” Matteo whispered, his small fingers tightening around hers. “Dino’s breath is holding. He just unbuttoned his top coat button. I heard the elastic snap. He’s reaching for his belt.”

Elena felt a surge of adrenaline hit her veins. She held a small radio transmitter in her palm, connected directly to an earpiece tucked into Marco’s ear.

She pressed the silent button three times—their pre-arranged signal for an imminent threat.

Down at the table, Marco didn't miss a beat. He took a slow sip of his wine, his face completely unreadable.

“You know, Antonio,” Marco said smoothly, setting his glass down. “My father always told me never to trust a man who brings machine pistols to a dinner table.”

Moretti’s eyes widened in sudden shock. “What?”

“Dino,” Marco said coldly, looking directly at the enforcer. “Take your hand off your hidden Uzi before I have Frank blow your arm off under the table.”

Dino froze, his hand buried under his heavy coat, completely stunned that Marco knew the exact weapon he was holding.

Moretti realized the ambush had failed. His face twisted into a grotesque mask of rage. “Kill them all!” Moretti screamed, slamming his hands on the table.

Dino whipped out the suppressed submachine gun, but Marco was already moving. With lightning speed, Marco flipped the heavy mahogany table onto its side, creating a massive wooden barrier just as a storm of bullets erupted through the hall.

Up in the balcony, the thunderous roar of gunfire echoed violently. Luca and Matteo covered their ears, whimpering in pain at the sheer volume of the noise.

“Cover your ears! Press against me!” Elena yelled, pulling both boys under her body, shielding them with her own frame as bullets strayed high, shattering the glass windows above the balcony.

Down below, the De Luca guards returned fire, but Moretti’s men had brought superior numbers. Suddenly, a loud CRACK echoed through the mansion’s main power room in the basement.
