Chapter 6 - Blood and Symphony

Complete blackness engulfed the grand dining hall. Outside, the storm raged, but inside, without a single light source or window reflection, no human eye could see a hand held in front of its face.
“Dammit! I can’t see!” Dino cursed from behind the overturned table, blindly firing three rounds into the dark. The muzzle flashes provided fleeting, blinding sparks that instantly died out, leaving the room darker than before.
Panic rippled through Moretti’s men. “Where is he? Find the light switch!”
High in the dark balcony, Elena looked around, but her eyes were useless. It was pitch black.
However, beside her, Matteo and Luca stood up. The terror had vanished from their little faces. In the dark, they were not helpless children. In the dark, they were masters of the realm.
“Dad!” Matteo called out through the earpiece transmitter strapped to his chest. “Dad, can you hear me?”
In the pitch-black hall below, Marco was crouched behind his flipped table, his tactical pistol drawn, his eyes completely useless in the absolute dark. He pressed his earpiece. “Matteo! Stay down!”
“Dad, listen to us!” Luca’s calm, confident voice echoed in Marco’s ear. “They are blind, but we can see everything. Dino is eight paces from the grand fireplace, reloading. His left boot is squeaking on the broken glass.”
Marco shifted his posture in the dark, pointing his weapon toward the direction of the fireplace. He didn't need vision; he trusted his son’s voice implicitly.
“Three paces to his right,” Matteo added smoothly. “Another guard is breathing heavily near the sideboard.”
Marco raised his gun, aimed into the pitch blackness, and fired two precise shots—BANG! BANG!
A heavy body collapsed onto the floor with a groan, followed by the clatter of a dropped weapon.
“Got him!” Luca cheered softly. “Now two men are moving along the north wall. They’re walking fast toward the main doors. Step sound at twelve o'clock!”
Marco moved like a phantom in the dark. Guided entirely by the real-time acoustic map being fed into his ear by his six-year-old blind twins, he moved through the room with terrifying efficiency.
BANG! BANG!
Two more enforcers dropped into the darkness.
Moretti was screaming now, terror choking his voice. “What is this? How is he hitting us?! He’s a demon! Run!”
Moretti sprinted blindly toward the exit, but he tripped over an overturned chair and crashed heavily onto the marble floor. He scrambled in the dark, whimpering, until he felt the icy cold steel of a pistol barrel pressed directly against the center of his forehead.
“The game is over, Antonio,” Marco’s dark, lethal voice growled from the blackness inches above him.
Suddenly, a hidden emergency generator clicked on in the basement. The wall sconces hummed back to life, flooding the room with dim, yellow light.
Moretti blinked against the light, looking up in sheer horror. All six of his heavily armed enforcers were lying dead or unconscious on the floor. Marco stood over him, unflinching, his dark suit unruffled, his eyes burning with absolute triumph.
At the top of the stairs, the velvet curtains opened. Elena emerged, holding Matteo and Luca by their hands.
The two boys walked down the grand marble staircase without hesitation, their heads held high, stepping over broken glass and debris with perfect, effortless precision. They didn't fumble. They didn't falter.
Moretti stared at the two blind children in utter, hysterical disbelief. “How... how did you do this?” he gasped, blood dripping from his nose. “You were blind!”
Marco didn't answer him. He handed his gun to Frank, walked past the trembling Don, and dropped to his knees right at the foot of the stairs.
He pulled Matteo, Luca, and Elena into a single, massive embrace. He buried his face in his sons’ hair, his broad shoulders shaking slightly as the adrenaline of the battle finally receded, replaced by an overwhelming wave of love and pride.
“You saved us,” Marco whispered, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. “My brave, brilliant boys.”

Matteo hugged his father’s neck tightly. “We didn't do it alone, Dad. Elena taught us how to see.”
Marco looked up at Elena. She was breathless, her hair slightly wild, a smudge of soot on her cheek, but to Marco, she was the most breathtaking vision in the universe. He reached up, cupped the back of her neck, and pulled her down, pressing his lips to hers in a fierce, passionate kiss that sealed their fates forever.
