Chapter 7 - The Vulnerable Empire

In the wake of the failed ambush, the New York underworld experienced an unprecedented seismic shift. The Moretti crime family was systematically dismantled overnight, their assets seized, their lieutenants surrendering or fleeing the state.

Marco De Luca’s reputation reached godlike proportions. The rumors circulating through the dark alleys of the city were terrifying: people claimed Marco had developed supernatural abilities, that he could hunt his enemies in absolute darkness, guided by invisible spirits.

Yet inside the granite walls of the De Luca estate, a very different kind of story was unfolding.

It was three in the morning. Elena sat on the window seat in the grand library, wrapping a thick cashmere cardigan around her shoulders. She couldn't sleep. The adrenaline of the battle, the memory of Marco’s desperate, passionate kiss, and the overwhelming reality of her new life kept her mind racing.

The heavy mahogany door clicked open softly.

Marco stepped into the room. He had discarded his suit jacket and tie; his dark dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, rolling up at the sleeves to reveal his muscular forearms and intricate tattoos. He carried two mugs of steaming tea.

“I saw the light on under the door,” Marco said quietly, walking over and handing her a mug.

“Thank you,” Elena murmured, taking a sip. It was chamomile with honey—exactly how she liked it.

Marco sat down across from her on the wide leather couch, resting his elbows on his knees, his dark eyes locked onto her face.

“Are you alright?” Marco asked, his voice low and gentle—a voice he reserved only for her and his sons. “I know tonight was... violently outside the realm of academia.”

Elena let out a faint smile, looking down at her tea. “If you had told me six months ago that I would be providing tactical acoustic coordinates to a mafia don during a blackout shootout... I would have recommended you for psychiatric evaluation.”

Marco let out a low, velvety laugh that sent a pleasant warmth straight through her chest.

“You were incredible, Elena,” Marco said, his expression turning serious. “When those bullets started flying... my only fear wasn't dying. It was the thought of anything happening to you.”

Elena looked up, meeting his gaze. The mask of the ruthless Capo dei Capi was completely gone. Sitting before her was simply a man—haunted, fiercely protective, and deeply vulnerable.

“Marco,” Elena said softly. “Why did you hide them for so long? The boys. Why did you keep them isolated from the world?”

Marco lowered his head, staring at his hands—hands that had carried weapons and built an empire of fear.

“Because I blamed myself,” Marco confessed, his voice rough with buried pain. “When my wife, Isabella, was pregnant with the twins, a rival gang launched a bomb attack on my car. Isabella survived the blast, but the trauma caused her to go into premature labor. She died giving birth to Matteo and Luca. And when the doctors told me the boys were born blind... I believed it was my punishment.”

He looked up at her, tears glistening in the corners of his pitch-black eyes. “I thought my dark life had stolen their light. I was so afraid that if the world saw them as weak, my enemies would destroy them. So I hid them. I made them ghosts because I didn't know how to protect them.”

Elena set her mug down on the table. She slid off the window seat, knelt on the floor in front of Marco, and placed her hands gently over his calloused knuckles.

“You didn't steal their light, Marco,” Elena said with fierce, unwavering conviction. “You gave them life. And now... they have a future. They aren't weak. They are the strongest, bravest little boys I have ever met.”

Marco stared at her, overwhelmed by the pure, unmerited grace she offered him. He pulled her up onto his lap, wrapping his powerful arms around her waist, burying his face in the crook of her neck.

“Stay with us, Elena,” Marco begged softly against her skin. “Not just as their teacher. Be my wife. Be their mother. Help me build a world where they never have to hide again.”

Elena felt tears overflow her eyes, streaming down her cheeks. She cupped his handsome face in her hands, looking into the eyes of the man she had come to love with every fiber of her soul.

“Yes,” she whispered. “Yes, Marco. I’m not going anywhere.”
