Chapter 7 - The Counter-Trap

Three weeks later, the Hudson Valley estate looked completely transformed.
The gray, ominous gloom of late November had given way to crisp, bright December mornings, with a light blanket of fresh snow dusting the rolling lawns down toward the river.
Inside the main dining hall, the long mahogany table was set for breakfast, but the heavy tension that had once defined the room was entirely gone.
Harper sat in a booster chair, happily dipping pancakes into maple syrup while chattering excitedly about building a snowman outside. Mia sat across from her, laughing softly as she wiped a drop of syrup from the little girl's chin.
At the head of the table sat Dominic, reviewing financial documents on his tablet, a cup of black coffee resting beside his right hand.
The door to the grand foyer opened, and Marcus stepped in, holding a thick manila envelope bearing federal seal stamps.
“Boss,” Marcus said, placing the envelope beside Dominic’s coffee. “The extradition papers came through from Zurich. Claire’s Swiss bank accounts have been fully seized by international asset recovery, and the federal prosecutor in Manhattan just formally indicted Nathan Cross on sixteen counts of racketeering, conspiracy, and extortion.”
Dominic didn’t look up from his tablet immediately. He scrolled down one final page before setting the device down and picking up the envelope.
“Did Nathan cooperate?” Dominic asked calmly.
“Not at first,” Marcus grinned. “Turns out, once we transferred him to a maximum-security federal holding facility and let him realize that Claire had tried to empty his personal offshore accounts behind his back before turning him in, he started singing like a canary. He gave us every name in the Moretti syndicate.”
“Good,” Dominic said, tossing the envelope onto the center of the table. “Let the Feds handle Moretti. We’re out of the enforcement game for good. The new legal and security restructuring is complete?”
“100%,” Marcus nodded. “All syndicate operations have been formally transferred to our legal holdings division. We’re officially clean, boss. Real estate, logistics, and legitimate investments only.”
“Good work, Marcus. Take the rest of the week off.”
“Thank you, boss.” Marcus tipped an imaginary hat toward Mia and Harper before heading back out toward the foyer.
Mia looked up from her coffee cup, her hazel eyes sparkling with amusement. “You’re retiring from the underworld? Just like that?”
“Just like that,” Dominic smiled, leaning back in his chair and taking a sip of his coffee. “I spent twenty years fighting wars over territory I didn't even care about. I realized my favorite part of the estate isn't the wine cellar, and it isn't the security grid.”
“Oh yeah?” Mia raised an eyebrow playfully. “What is it?”
“The kitchen,” Dominic said smoothly. “Specifically, the mornings when the little girl sitting over there tries to feed me her leftover pancakes.”

Harper stopped chewing mid-bite, looked up at Dominic with wide, serious eyes, and solemnly offered him a piece of sticky pancake on her fork across the table.
Dominic didn't hesitate. He leaned forward and ate it, causing both Mia and Harper to burst into bright, carefree laughter that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings of the dining hall.
