Chapter 8 - Blood on the Marble

Though the internal war was over, the echoes of the past still demanded a final resolution.

Two days later, in a heavily secured federal courtroom in downtown Manhattan, the preliminary hearings for Nathan Cross and Claire Bennett commenced.

Dominic didn't attend. He had delegated his legal team to observe, preferring to spend the morning walking with Mia and Harper through the frosted sculpture gardens behind the estate.

Yet, as the trial proceedings unfolded downtown, a final piece of collateral drama played out behind closed doors.

Claire Bennett sat at the defendant's table in a standard orange jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her posture rigid with humiliation and rage. Her high-society family had formally disowned her within twenty-four hours of her arrest, refusing to fund her legal defense or even answer her phone calls from the holding facility.

Nathan sat three seats away, refusing to even look in her direction.

When the federal judge read the formal charges—conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, extortion, and financial fraud—Claire stood up abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the linoleum floor.

“This is a miscarriage of justice!” she screamed, pointing a shaking finger toward the prosecutors. “Dominic Vale is just as guilty as we are! He runs a criminal empire! He launders money through his construction firms!”

The judge banged his gavel twice, the sharp sound echoing through the courtroom.

“Sit down, Ms. Bennett, or you will be held in contempt.”

“You don't understand!” she sobbed, tears of pure desperation spilling down her cheeks. “He set us up! He knew what we were planning all along and he let us walk right into his trap!”

“Your defense counsel can present those arguments during the trial phase,” the judge said coldly. “Bail is denied. Next case.”

As two federal marshals stepped forward, grabbing Claire by the arms and hauling her away toward the holding cells, she cast one final, venomous look toward the courtroom doors—realizing too late that the man she had tried to destroy hadn't even bothered to show up to watch her fall.

She wasn't a threat anymore. She was just a footnote in a life that had already moved on without her.
