Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Back at the Hudson Valley estate, the afternoon sun cast long, golden rays across the frozen grass.

Dominic and Mia sat on the wooden bench overlooking the river, watching Harper chase a stray autumn leaf that the wind was blowing across the terrace.

“Do you ever miss it?” Mia asked quietly, resting her head gently against Dominic’s shoulder as he wrapped a heavy woolen blanket around them both.

“Miss what?” Dominic asked.

“The power. The fear. The life you had before all of this.”

Dominic looked out across the water, watching the whitecaps cresting under the cold wind.

“For a long time, I thought power was about control,” Dominic said, his voice thoughtful and steady. “I thought if I locked every door, checked every background file, and kept everyone at arm's length, nothing could ever hurt me.”

He turned his head, pressing a soft kiss to the top of Mia’s hair.

“I was wrong. That wasn't power. That was a prison. The only real power I’ve ever had was the ability to protect the people I love.”

Mia smiled, turning her face upward and meeting his lips in a gentle, lingering kiss that tasted of winter air and absolute peace.

Down by the stone fountain, Harper let out a joyful shout as she finally caught the stubborn leaf, holding it up like a trophy for them to see.

Dominic raised his hand, waving back at her with a genuine, unhurried smile.

The shadows of the past had finally cleared away.
