Chapter 2 - The Sound of Two Hearts

The bright fluoroscopy lamps of the underground trauma room hummed with a low, clinical buzz. Dr. Harrison moved the transducer wand across Isabelle’s swollen abdomen, his eyes fixed on the high-definition monitor. White noise echoed through the room—a wet, rhythmic swooshing sound that suddenly divided into two distinct, rapid beats.

Thump-thump-thump-thump.

Dr. Harrison froze. His hand tightened on the transducer, his breath catching in his throat.

"Doctor?" Vincent’s voice cut through the silence like a blade. He stepped forward from the tiled wall, his coat soaked with rain and blood, his dark eyes sharp with sudden alarm. "What is it? What’s wrong with the child?"

"It’s not one child, Vincent," Harrison murmured, adjusting the frequency dial. The image expanded, revealing two clear fetal profiles resting side-by-side inside the womb. "She’s carrying twins. A boy and a girl."

Isabelle let out a weak, breathless sob, her eyes shining with tears as she looked up at the screen. "Twins... Oh God, they're okay? Are they okay?"

"They are resilient," Harrison said, though his eyes remained glued to the telemetry output scrolling on a secondary display. "Heart rates are stable. Placental attachment is intact despite the blunt force trauma from her fall. But... that isn't all."

Harrison pulled up a rapid genetic diagnostic panel—a state-of-the-art DNA analyzer reserved for high-priority cases. Hours earlier, when Isabelle was first connected to the IV line, Harrison had drawn blood for routine cross-matching. The analyzer had finished its sequence.

The doctor’s hands began to tremble. He looked at the screen, then at Vincent, his expression a mixture of profound disbelief and terror.

"Vincent... look at the sequence markers," Harrison whispered, turning the secondary monitor toward the crime boss. "Look at the paternal loci."

Vincent leaned in, his jaw clenched tight. On the screen, two DNA columns were aligned side-by-side. The left column belonged to the fetus. The right column belonged to a profile archived in the estate’s private database five years ago—Vincent Moretti’s own genetic code.

The match was absolute: 99.9%.

Vincent felt the ground shift beneath his feet. The air left his lungs in a sharp gasp. "This is impossible," he growled, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark whisper. "I have never seen this woman before tonight. Isabelle... who fathered these children?"

Isabelle cringed at the thunder in his voice, clutching the hospital sheet against her chest. "I... I don't know who the donor was," she wept, her voice trembling. "Seven months ago, my mother was dying of cancer. The hospital bills were hundreds of thousands of dollars. An elite private medical firm in downtown Chicago reached out to me... They said they were conducting a confidential surrogate program for an anonymous high-net-worth donor. They paid her medical fees, and I underwent the procedure. But weeks later, the clinic went dark. The doctors vanished, and I was told the implantation failed. I thought... I thought I was carrying my late ex-fiancé's child through a separate attempt... I had no idea!"

Vincent stared at her, the pieces of a dark puzzle clicking into place inside his mind. Five years ago, before his late wife Julia died in the bombing, they had preserved genetic material at a top-tier fertility bank downtown—a bank owned by a holding company connected to the Falcone syndicate. The Falcones hadn't just destroyed his family back then; they had stolen his legacy, waiting for the right moment to use his own blood against him.

"You are carrying my children," Vincent whispered, his dark eyes locking onto Isabelle with an overwhelming intensity that made her heart race. "My son. My daughter."
