Chapter 4 - The Broken Thread

The atmosphere in the room turned instantly toxic.

Wren instinctively stepped in front of Lily, pulling the child behind her back. Lily shrank into her mother’s skirts, clutching her ragged denim doll tightly against her chest.

Weston turned slowly to face his fiancée. The gentle warmth that had been in his eyes moments before vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, impenetrable wall of ice.

"Watch your mouth, Genevieve," Weston said, his voice dropping into a quiet, lethal register.

Genevieve took a step into the room, her mink coat rustling, her eyes flashing with anger. "Watch my mouth? I am your future wife, Weston! My father agreed to the truce on the condition that I take my rightful place as mistress of this estate! And I come here to find you entertaining a cheap maid and her bastard child in the sunroom?"

"Genevieve," Weston warned, taking a single step forward. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

Genevieve ignored him. Her eyes locked onto Lily, who was peeking nervously from behind Wren’s legs. Genevieve sneered, looking down at the little girl’s worn denim doll.

"Look at this filthy trash," Genevieve spat, reaching out with a manicured hand to snatch the doll from Lily’s grip. "Bringing dirty, infested rags into this house!"

"No! Mr. Doll!" Lily screamed, tears exploding from her eyes as Genevieve yanked the toy away.

"Give it back!" Wren shouted, stepping forward to grab Genevieve’s arm.

"Get your hands off me, you servant!" Genevieve shrieked. With a vicious flick of her wrist, she swung her arm, aiming to strike Wren across the face.

BANG!

Weston’s hand shot out like a iron clamp, catching Genevieve’s wrist two inches from Wren’s cheek. His grip was so tight that Genevieve let out a sharp gasp of pain, her red acrylic nails digging into her own palm.

"If you raise a hand in this house again, Genevieve," Weston whispered, leaning close enough that his breath touched her ear, "I will end the truce before the sun sets."

Genevieve’s face went pale. She looked into Weston’s gray eyes and saw a terrifying, unhinged darkness that she had never seen before. She trembled, her fingers loosening, letting the denim doll slip from her grasp.

The doll fell onto the hardwood floor with a dull, surprisingly heavy THUD.

It didn't bounce like a soft cotton toy. It struck the wood with a sharp, metallic sound, as if something solid and heavy was sewn inside its chest.

Genevieve stumbled back, snatching her wrist away from Weston’s grip, rubbing her red skin. "You’re crazy, Weston! You’re choosing a maid over the Marchetti family! My father will hear about this!"

"Let him call me," Weston said coldly. "Marcus! Escort Miss Marchetti to her car. If she returns without an invitation, lock the gates."

Genevieve glared at Wren with pure, unadulterated hatred, then turned on her heel and swept out of the room, her heels clicking furiously down the corridor.

Silence returned to the room.

Lily immediately dropped to her knees on the floor, crawling over to pick up her doll. "Mr. Doll... are you okay?"

Weston stood frozen in the center of the room. His eyes were locked onto the floor where the doll had fallen.

He was a man who had spent fifteen years dealing with concealed weapons, surveillance gear, and tactical equipment. Soft plush toys made of fabric and cotton stuffing did not drop onto hardwood floors with a metallic clatter.

He walked slowly toward Lily, kneeling down beside her.

"Lily," Weston said gently, his voice calm and smooth. "May I see Mr. Doll for a moment?"

Lily looked at him with wide, tear-filled brown eyes. She hesitated, then slowly handed the patched denim toy to the big man.

Weston took the doll in his large hands. It was light, but as his fingers squeezed the center of the toy’s torso, he felt a hard, rectangular object roughly the size of a matchbox, wrapped in thick layers of canvas and sewn directly into the inner lining.

He flipped the doll over. The stitching along the back spine was crude, made with thick black thread—the kind of thread used in high-end automotive upholstery.

Weston looked up at Wren.

Wren was watching him, her face pale, her hands trembling.

"Where did this doll come from, Wren?" Weston asked quietly.

Wren swallowed hard, stepping closer. "My husband... Leo made it for her. He was an upholsterer at the garage before... before the accident. Three days before he died in the hospital, he woke up for ten minutes. He was delirious, terrified... he grabbed my hand and gave me that doll. He made me swear on Lily’s life that she would never lose it. He told me it was her guardian angel."

Weston’s pulse began to race, a cold adrenaline surging through his veins.

"Marcus!" Weston called out loudly toward the hall.

Marcus stepped into the doorway instantly. "Yes, Boss?"

"Bring my surgical kit and the high-frequency scanner to my study," Weston commanded, standing up while holding the doll carefully in both hands. "Now."
