Chapter 5 - The Voice in the Velvet

The executive study was locked from the inside.

A bright halogen lamp illuminated the dark mahogany desk. Weston sat in his leather chair, a pair of fine silver surgical scissors in his hand. Beside him stood Marcus, holding a portable electronic diagnostic monitor.

Wren sat in the armchair across from the desk, her fingers wrapped tightly around a warm cup of tea. Lily had fallen fast asleep in the sunroom after eating her first real meal in months, guarded by two of Weston’s most trusted men.

Weston carefully snipped the thick black upholstery thread along the spine of the denim doll.

He pulled back the faded fabric and layers of grey cotton stuffing.

Nesting in the center of the doll was a custom-molded, water-resistant military titanium drive case, no larger than a cigarette lighter. Attached to the top of the case by a thin silver chain was a small, tarnished silver pendant shaped like a star.

Weston froze. The breath was knocked completely out of his lungs.

His hand shook violently as he reached out to pick up the silver star pendant.

He knew that pendant. He had bought it in Paris six years ago for his five-year-old daughter, Nadia. It had been around her neck on the morning she died.

"My God..." Marcus whispered, leaning over the desk, his face drained of all color. "Boss... that’s little Nadia’s pendant."

Wren gasped, setting her tea cup down so hard it splashed onto the wood. "What? What is that? Leo... Leo had that in the doll?"

Weston didn't speak. His face was a terrifying mask of pale stone. He pulled the titanium drive from the doll’s chest and plugged its integrated USB connector into his secure, air-gapped terminal on the desk.

The monitor flickered to life. Three encrypted audio files and four PDF documents appeared on the screen.

Weston clicked the first audio file.

A rough, desperate voice filled the quiet study through the high-end speakers. It was heavy with static and the sound of shallow, agonizing breathing.

"If anyone is listening to this... my name is Leo Osei," the voice gasped, coughing violently. "I am an automotive technician at Apex Customs in South Boston. It is November fourteenth. Three hours ago, two men brought in an armored black SUV belonging to Weston Kade. They told me to install a military C4 demolition charge beneath the secondary fuel line, wired to a remote frequency detonator."

Wren covered her mouth, a horrified sob escaping her throat.

The recording continued, Leo’s voice shaking with raw terror.

"I refused. I told them I wouldn't do it. Then... then a woman walked into the garage. She was wearing a white coat. Genevieve Marchetti. She pulled out a gun and shot my assistant in the head right in front of me. She told me if I didn't install the charge, she would go to my home and kill my pregnant wife, Wren."

Weston’s gray eyes burned with an absolute, apocalyptic fury. His knuckles turned white as he slammed his fist onto the desk, cracking the polished mahogany wood.

"I had no choice..." Leo’s voice sobbed over the speaker. "I installed the charge. But while Genevieve was on the phone, I managed to snatch the silver star pendant off the child's car seat that was being pre-fitted in the back... and I hid a micro-frequency bug inside the detonator housing. This drive contains the audio recording of Genevieve Marchetti giving the order to detonate the bomb... three blocks from the restaurant."

The audio file clicked off.

A second file automatically began to play.

A sharp, clear, unmistakable female voice filled the room.

"Is it set?" Genevieve Marchetti’s voice rang through the speakers, crisp and cold. "Good. Make sure the wife and the brat are inside before you trigger it. Weston needs to suffer enough that he’ll agree to the truce merger. Once Odalys and the kid are dead, my father will force Weston into an engagement to end the war. We take Kade Enterprises from the inside."

CLICK.

Silence fell over the study like a velvet shroud.

Marcus stood frozen, his hand resting on his sidearm, his eyes wide with absolute horror.

Wren was weeping silently, her hands covering her face, realizing for the first time the terrifying, monstrous truth behind her husband’s death. Leo hadn't died in a random industrial accident. He had been burned alive in his garage by the Marchetti family to cover up the murder of Weston Kade’s family.

Weston slowly leaned back in his chair.

He did not scream. He did not break the furniture.

The grief that had consumed him for three agonizing years—the guilt that had hollowed out his soul—vanished in a single second, replaced by an absolute, crystal-clear, lethal focus.

He looked across the desk at Wren.

"Your husband was a hero, Wren," Weston said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly soft whisper. "He gave his life to save a record of the truth. He saved this for me."

Weston stood up, picking up Nadia’s silver star pendant, touching it to his lips, then placing it gently inside his pocket.

He looked at Marcus.

"Marcus," Weston said quietly.

"Yes, Don Kade?"

"Call Silas Marchetti," Weston ordered, his gray eyes shining like polished steel. "Tell him the truce is officially ratified. Tell him I want the grand engagement banquet held tomorrow night at Kade Tower."

May you like

Marcus’s jaw set into stone. "And the Marchetti captains?"

"Tell them to invite everyone," Weston whispered. "Every captain, every soldier, every ally they have in the city. I want them all in one room."
