Chapter 7 - The Light in the Sunroom

Four months later.

The dark, freezing winter that had held Boston in its icy grip finally gave way to the soft, warm light of early May. The snow on the Kade Estate melted away, replaced by blooming red roses, lush green lawns, and the sweet song of spring birds.

The Marchetti crime family was completely gone, dismantled by federal indictments and total financial asset seizures. Kade Enterprises had been completely legitimate, its security divisions restructured to protect the city's vulnerable communities and fund charity initiatives.

At the Kade Estate, the heavy gothic silence that had plagued the mansion for three long years was gone forever.

In the sunroom wing, four-year-old Lily ran across the plush carpet, wearing a bright yellow sundress and brand-new pink sneakers. She carried her patched blue denim doll in one hand and a wooden toy airplane in the other, giggling as she chased a golden retriever puppy across the room.

Wren stood near the open French doors, wearing an elegant cream linen dress. Her hair was down, falling in soft waves over her shoulders. Her face was no longer pale or hollow; her green eyes shone with health, peace, and deep happiness.

A pair of warm, strong arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.

Wren smiled, leaning her head back against Weston’s broad chest.

Weston rested his chin gently on her shoulder, looking out at the sunny garden where Lily was playing. He wore a simple white linen shirt, his gray eyes warm, clear, and filled with a peace he had never thought he would feel again.

"What are you thinking about?" Wren asked softly, turning slightly in his arms to look up into his face.

"I’m thinking about the first night I saw you," Weston murmured, reaching up to gently tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. "In that tiny, cold apartment... watching a brave woman go hungry so her child could eat."

Wren reached up, touching his sharp jawline with her soft fingers. "And I was thinking about the man who stood in the shadows, who gave us a home, who gave my husband justice, and who saved my daughter's life."

Weston pulled a small blue velvet box from his pocket.

Wren’s breath caught in her throat.

Weston didn't drop to one knee like a corporate executive making a business deal. He held her hands in his, looking directly into her green eyes with absolute, unshakeable devotion.

He opened the box, revealing a simple, breathtaking ring—a radiant-cut yellow diamond set in platinum, warm as sunshine.

"Wren," Weston said, his voice deep, rich, and steady as an anchor. "You and Lily didn't just come into this house. You brought light into a place that was dead. You healed a broken man. I don't want to be your boss. I want to be your husband. I want to spend every morning of my life protecting you, loving you, and being a father to our little girl."

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness filled Wren’s eyes. She smiled, her heart swelling with a love so deep it took her breath away.

"Yes, Weston," Wren whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"

Weston pulled her close, lifting her slightly off her feet as he kissed her—a deep, passionate, reverent kiss that carried all the healing, hope, and promise of a bright new future.

Down on the lawn, Lily saw them kissing and came running into the sunroom, her little shoes squeaking against the hardwood floor.

"Ewww! Mommy and Mr. Weston are kissing!" Lily cheered, holding up her denim doll. "Mr. Doll says you have to give me a hug too!"

Weston laughed—a rich, booming, wonderful sound that echoed through the sunlit halls of the estate. He dropped down onto one knee, opening his broad arms wide.

Lily threw herself into his arms, wrapping her tiny arms tightly around his neck. Weston lifted her up onto his shoulder, holding Wren tightly against his side with his other arm.

Together, the three of them stood in the sun-drenched doorway, looking out over the blooming gardens of the Kade Estate. The dark night was over, the shadows were buried forever, and in their place stood a real, whole, and unbreakable family, bound together by truth, healed by love, and blessed with a forever after.
