Chapter 5 - Whispers and Shadows

Three days passed in a strange, golden golden cage.

Nora was provided with clothes she had only ever seen in high-end department store windows—soft cashmere sweaters, silk trousers, and velvet dresses for Wren. Specialized pediatric nurses arrived twice a day under armed escort to check Wren’s lungs, while private chefs prepared meals that Nora felt almost guilty eating.

Yet, despite the luxury, the tension in the mansion was palpable.

Through the heavy oak doors of the penthouse wing, Nora could hear the constant, muffled bustle of Stellan’s empire mobilizing. Heavy boots paced the corridors. Low, tense voices spoke of dock seizures, wiretaps, and missing lieutenants.

Stellan himself barely slept. He vanished for hours into the city, returning in the dead of night smelling of rain, gunpowder, and expensive tobacco.

Yet, no matter how late he returned, his first stop was always the penthouse.

At 2:00 AM on Friday morning, Nora woke to the soft creak of the nursery door.

She slid out of her bed, pulling a dark silk robe around her shoulders, and stepped quietly into the hallway.

In the dim light of a nightlamp, Stellan sat in a rocking chair beside Wren’s crib. He had thrown his jacket onto a chair, rolled up his sleeves, and opened his collar. He was holding a tiny silver rattle—the one Julian had made out of scrap metal—and spinning it gently in his massive, scarred hands.

Wren was fast asleep, her tiny chest rising and falling rhythmically.

Nora leaned against the doorframe, watching him. "You look exhausted."

Stellan didn't turn around, but his shoulders relaxed slightly. "Exhaustion is a luxury for men with nothing to protect."

Nora walked softly into the room and sat on the low ottoman beside his chair. "You come in here every night."

"She looks like him," Stellan murmured, his eyes fixed on the baby’s sleeping face. "Julian had the same stubborn chin. The same way of curling his fingers when he sleeps. I spent two years hating him for leaving. Now... I sit here and I realize he was the only smart one among us."

Nora looked at Stellan’s harsh profile—the scar, the sharp jaw, the dark shadows beneath his eyes. "You aren't what I thought you were, Stellan."

He offered a cold, humorless smile. "Don't soften me in your mind, Nora. I’m a violent man who does violent things to keep this city from swallowing us whole."

"I saw you hold her when she was screaming," Nora said quietly. "I saw a man who would burn the world down before he let her get hurt. That isn't violence, Stellan. That’s love."

Stellan went completely silent. He turned his head slowly, his grey eyes locking onto hers in the warm gloom of the nursery. The air between them suddenly felt charged, thick with an undeniable, terrifying pull.

"Nora," he rasped, his voice dipping low. "You shouldn't look at me like that."

"Like what?" she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Like I'm a man who can save you," Stellan said, reaching out to gently trace the curve of her jawline with his thumb. His skin was warm, rough, and sent a shiver straight down her spine. "I’m the reason you're in danger."

"No," Nora said firmly, placing her hand over his. "You're the reason my daughter is breathing tonight."

Before Stellan could answer, his private phone vibrated violently against his hip.

The moment broke instantly. Stellan pulled out the encrypted device, glanced at the screen, and his face transformed back into a mask of pure steel.

"What is it, Marco?" Stellan barked into the receiver.

A frantic voice crackled through the speaker, loud enough for Nora to catch snippets: "Boss... we got a breach at the South Side warehouse... someone leaked the location of Julian's old workshop... Moretti’s men are there now!"

Stellan stood up so fast the rocking chair creaked. "Block the perimeter! I'm on my way!"

He looked down at Nora, his eyes burning with terrifying focus. "Stay inside this room. Lock the steel bolt behind me. Do not open it for anyone except me."

May you like

"Stellan, wait—"

"Lock the door, Nora!" he growled, already sprinting out into the corridor.
