Chapter 8 - The Shadow's End

The downfall of the Moretti syndicate was the fastest, most spectacular collapse in Chicago’s history.

By 4:00 PM, federal agents, FBI SWAT teams, and state police had surrounded the Grand Regency Hotel. Armed with the unencrypted evidence from Julian's ledger—which detailed twenty years of bribery, murder, and extortion—federal marshals slapped handcuffs on Vance Moretti before he could even reach his private helicopter.

The news broadcasts played non-stop across every network. The Moretti family was erased from the city’s power grid in a single afternoon.

And Stellan Cross?

He didn't celebrate at a club. He didn't meet with politicians.

He sat on the rug in the penthouse living room of his estate, wearing a dark sweater and gray trousers, helping ten-month-old Wren learn how to stack wooden blocks.

Nora sat on the sofa beside him, holding a mug of hot tea, watching the two of them with a warm, disbelieving smile.

"She’s getting better at balancing them," Stellan murmured, carefully guiding Wren’s tiny hands as she placed a red block on top of a yellow one. "Her grip strength is increasing."

"That’s because you bought her a set of solid mahogany blocks that weigh half a pound each," Nora laughed gently.

Stellan looked up at her, a tiny, rare smirk touching his lips. "Cross children build with solid wood. It’s a family rule."

Wren squealed with delight, knocking the tower over with her small fist, and immediately reached out her arms toward Stellan, babbling happily: "Pa... Pa... Ba!"

Stellan froze.

His gray eyes widened in utter shock. "Did she just...?"

Nora gasped, setting her tea down. "She tried to say your name."

Stellan reached out, gently picking Wren up and lifting her into the air. The baby giggled hysterically, kicking her tiny feet against his chest.

Stellan brought her down, holding her against his heart, his face buried in her soft hair.

"She’s healthy, Nora," Stellan rasped, his voice thick with an emotion he had spent a lifetime suppressing. "The doctors said her lungs are fully recovered. She doesn't need the oxygen mist anymore."

"I know," Nora whispered, sliding off the sofa to kneel beside him on the rug. "It’s a miracle."

Stellan looked at Nora. The shadows that had defined his face for thirty-five years seemed to have melted away under the soft golden light of the living room fire.

"It wasn't a miracle," Stellan said softly, taking Nora’s hand in his free grip. "It was you. You brought her into this house. You brought Julian back to me. You saved my life, Nora."

Nora looked into his eyes—the eyes that had once looked like winter concrete, now burning with a deep, unyielding warmth.

"I didn't come here to save you, Stellan," Nora admitted softly. "I just came to scrub your floors."

May you like

"You own the house now, Nora," Stellan whispered, leaning closer until his lips brushed against hers. "You own all of it."

The kiss was slow, gentle, and filled with the promise of a peace neither of them had ever known. Wren sat between them, clapping her tiny hands and babbling happily as the rain outside turned into a soft, quiet snow.
