Chapter 6 - The Breach

The storm raged through the night, but inside the mansion, the real nightmare was just beginning.
At 4:15 AM, the lights in the penthouse wing flickered once, twice, and then plunged into total darkness.
The low hum of the air conditioning died. The emergency red floor lights flickered on, casting long, bloody shadows across the silk wallpaper.
Nora stood in the center of the nursery, holding Wren tightly against her chest. Her heart was beating so hard she could hear it in her ears.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
The sound of heavy, unhurried footsteps echoed down the private hallway outside her locked double doors.
It wasn't Stellan’s walk. Stellan moved like a storm—fast, precise, silent. These footsteps were heavy, arrogant, accompanied by the metallic dragging of an iron rod against the floorboards.
"Nora..." a raspy, unfamiliar voice called out from behind the door. "Come out, sweet girl. Let’s have a talk about Julian's little secret."
Nora’s breath seized in her throat. She backed into the furthest corner of the nursery, pressing her back against the wall, wrapping her body entirely around Wren.
"I know you're in there," the voice chuckled. It was a greasy, ancient voice—the sound of an old snake slithering over dry leaves. "You see, Stellan thinks he’s the only one who can run a blood test. But I have eyes inside the Northside clinic. A ten-month-old preemie with Julian's blood type? It didn't take a genius to put the pieces together."
The heavy oak doors creaked as something heavy leaned against them.
"My name is Victor Cross," the voice announced smoothly. "I'm Stellan’s uncle. The man who should have taken the throne when my brother died. And if you give me Julian's hard drive... I might just let you and the bastard baby walk out of Chicago alive."
"I don't have it!" Nora screamed through the reinforced wood, tears streaming down her face. "I swear to God, I don't know what you're talking about!"
"Lying is such a nasty habit," Victor sighed.
A loud, mechanical BZZZZT hummed as an industrial metal saw began cutting through the electronic lock of the penthouse doors. Sparks showered through the crack beneath the door, illuminating the dark hall in blinding flashes of blue and white.
Nora looked around frantically. There were no windows in the inner nursery. No back doors. She was trapped.
She grabbed a heavy brass floor lamp from beside the rocking chair, snapped the cord off, and held the heavy metal pole like a club in her right hand, while cradling Wren in her left arm.
"I won't let you touch her," Nora whimpered, her teeth grinding together in desperate fury. "I'll kill you! I swear I'll kill you!"
The saw tore through the last bolt.
The heavy double doors burst open with a deafening crash!
Three men in dark tactical gear stepped into the room, followed by an elderly man in a camel-hair coat with silver hair and cold, dead eyes.
Victor Cross smiled, showing a row of yellowed teeth. "How touching. The maid playing mother lion."
"Stay back!" Nora shrieked, raising the brass pole.
Victor motioned with his hand. "Grab the baby. Kill the girl."
One of the tactical guards lunged forward, reaching his gloved hand toward Wren.
Nora swung the brass lamp with all her strength, catching the guard flush across his jaw with a brutal CRACK! The man stumbled backward, his nose exploding in blood.
"Bitch!" the guard roared, pulling a silenced pistol from his holster.
Before he could raise the weapon, a roar echoed down the hallway that sounded less like a human voice and more like a dying building collapsing.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The guard’s chest erupted in three violent bursts of crimson. He collapsed onto the Persian rug like a felled tree.
Stellan Cross stepped through the shattered doorway.
He was covered in rain and blood. A broad tactical shotgun was locked against his shoulder, smoke curling from the barrel. His gray eyes were entirely black with a violent, demonic fury that sent a shockwave of cold horror through the room.
"Victor," Stellan rasped, his voice dropping into a horrifyingly calm whisper. "You touched my house."
Victor’s face went instantly grey. "Stellan! Wait—listen to me! She has the ledger—"
Stellan didn't wait. He didn't argue.
He raised his left hand, holding a heavy 9mm pistol, and fired twice.
The bullets tore through the knee caps of the remaining two tactical guards, dropping them to their knees screaming in agony.
Stellan strode forward, grabbed his uncle Victor by the throat with a single, massive hand, and slammed the old man against the stone fireplace mantle with enough force to crack the granite.
"You traded my brother to Vance Moretti," Stellan whispered into Victor's ear, his jaw trembling with murderous rage. "I found the wire transfer records in Julian's old workshop an hour ago. You sold my brother for ten million dollars."
Victor choked, his hands clawing uselessly at Stellan’s iron grip. "He... he was weak, Stellan! He was going to give the empire away!"
"He was my brother," Stellan growled.
With a swift, terrifying motion, Stellan drove his combat knife straight through Victor’s chest, pinning the traitor to the stone mantle.
Victor let out a sickening gasp, his eyes rolling back as life left his body.
Stellan let go. The old man slumped to the floor, motionless.
The room went dead quiet, save for the heavy rain lashing against the roof and the soft, frightened whimpering of Wren in Nora's arms.
Stellan stood over the bodies, his chest heaving, his hands soaked in fresh blood. He turned slowly toward Nora.
For a second, he looked terrified—terrified that she would look at him with hatred, that she would see the monster he truly was.
Nora stood in the corner, shaking violently, her eyes wide as she stared at the bloodshed.
Then, she did something that shattered Stellan’s heart into a thousand pieces.
She didn't run. She didn't scream.
She stepped over the fallen guards, walked straight up to Stellan, and pressed her forehead directly against his blood-stained chest, letting out a long, shuddering sob.

"You came back," she wept into his shirt. "You came back for us."
Stellan froze. Then, slowly, carefully, he dropped his weapons onto the floor, wrapped his massive arms around her and the baby, and pulled them into his chest, holding them like they were the only real things left in a burning world.
