Chapter 9 - From Shadows to Sun

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in Chicago. The frozen winds off Lake Michigan had yielded to warm breezes, blooming tulips, and clear blue skies.

In the probate court of Cook County, a judge signed the final decree with a heavy gold pen.

"By order of this court," the judge announced warmly, smiling down at the couple standing before his bench, "Wren Elizabeth Cross is hereby officially adopted by Stellan Alexander Cross, with full legal rights of heirship and surname."

Nora let out a happy tear, pressing her cheek against Stellan’s shoulder.

Stellan, wearing a pristine navy suit, held the sixteen-month-old girl in his arms. Wren was dressed in a little yellow dress, her dark blue eyes bright and curious as she reached out to touch the shiny brass seal on the judge's desk.

"Thank you, Your Honor," Stellan said smoothly.

They walked out of the courthouse together, flanked not by armed guards, but by a quiet group of legal aides carrying folders of legitimate business acquisitions. Over the past six months, Stellan had systematically dissolved the illicit branches of the Cross empire, transitioning every asset into clean real estate, green energy, and global shipping logistics.

The dark underworld of Chicago had lost its scariest Don—and gained its most powerful legitimate businessman.

When they returned to the estate that evening, the front gates stood wide open.

The cold marble hallway that had once terrified Nora was now filled with sunlight, fresh flowers, and tiny plastic toys scattered across the polished floor.

Mrs. Aldridge, the head housekeeper, stepped out to meet them, holding a silver tray with champagne and apple juice.

"Congratulations, Mr. Cross. Mrs. Cross," Mrs. Aldridge said, a genuine, warm smile gracing her face.

Nora smiled back, looking down at her left hand.

A breathtaking diamond ring sparkled on her finger—a simple, elegant solitaire that Stellan had given her three weeks ago on the quiet shore of Lake Michigan.

"Thank you, Mrs. Aldridge," Nora said warmly. "Where are the girls?"

"In the garden, ma'am," the housekeeper replied. "The new swing set was finished an hour ago."

Stellan carried Wren out through the glass doors toward the vast back lawn.

A large wooden swing set—crafted out of solid mahogany, carved with intricate butterfly designs—stood beneath the shade of an old oak tree.

Stellan set Wren down on the soft grass. The little girl instantly giggled and began toddling across the lawn on her sturdy legs, her small feet moving fast as she chased a yellow butterfly.

Nora walked up behind Stellan, wrapping her arms around his waist and leaning her head against his back.

"She’s walking so fast now," Nora murmured happily.

Stellan placed his hands over hers, turning around in her embrace to look down into her face.

"I spoke to the architect today," Stellan whispered, pulling her close. "He’s starting construction on the new children's wing next month."

Nora raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk touching her lips. "A new wing? Wren already has three rooms."

Stellan leaned down, his gray eyes shining with an overwhelming, boundless love, as he placed his hand gently against Nora’s flat stomach.

"Wren is going to need space," Stellan smiled softly against her lips. "When her baby brother arrives in the winter."

Nora gasped, her eyes widening in pure joy. "You... you knew?"

"Dr. Marcus called me twenty minutes ago with your lab results," Stellan chuckled, pulling her up into a deep, breathtaking kiss that lifted her feet off the grass. "I told you, Nora. I inspect everything in my world."
