Chapter 3 - The Public Humiliation

A quiet murmur rippled across the grand ballroom.
Christopher took a step toward the stage, his face darkening with rage. "Luke! Get down from there right now!" he demanded under his breath, signaling frantically to security guards near the doors.
Brenda’s smile flickered. Her hand instinctively drifted up to touch the diamond necklace around her throat.
Luke ignored his father completely. He rested his hands calmly on the edges of the mahogany podium.
"For fifteen years," Luke said, his voice perfectly modulated, filling every corner of the St. Regis, "my mother, Vivian Vance-Albright, supported this company. Her father, Thomas Vance, provided seventy percent of the initial capital that built Albright Global. My father provided his name."
The guests began whispering. High-profile investors tilted their heads, exchanging uneasy glances.
"Tonight, my mother couldn't be here," Luke continued, his gray eyes locking onto Brenda, who stood frozen in the third row. "She couldn't be here because she was drugged in her own bed by the woman standing right there—wearing my mother’s bespoke gown, wearing my mother’s diamonds, and wearing my late great-grandmother’s heirloom gold bracelet."
Gasps exploded across the room. Several cameras immediately turned away from the stage and zoomed directly in on Brenda’s pale face.
"That’s ridiculous!" Brenda gasped loudly, stepping back as guests around her began pulling away from her as if she carried a disease. "Christopher, stop him! He’s having a breakdown!"
Christopher stormed up the stage steps, his hand outstretched to grab the microphone. "Cut his mic! Cut the feed right now!"
Luke didn't move an inch. He pulled his tablet from under his arm and tapped the screen once.
The massive four-sided LED screens behind the stage—which were supposed to display corporate slides of Albright Global’s charity work—instantly went black.
A second later, bright high-definition video footage filled the screens.
It was the interior security footage from our Beverly Hills mansion, recorded earlier that afternoon.
On four fifty-foot screens, three hundred guests watched Brenda walk into my bedroom holding a porcelain bowl of soup. They watched her pull a small plastic bottle of liquid sedatives from her handbag, squeeze twenty drops into the broth, stir it thoroughly, and present it to me with a sweet, supportive smile.
The audio was pristine.
"Vivian, you look so pale. Eat this and get some rest. I'll make sure Christopher doesn't make a scene."
The ballroom became dead silent. It was a silence so profound you could hear the hum of the air conditioning unit.
Brenda let out a sharp, choked gasp, her face draining of every drop of color. She staggered backward, her heels catching on the hem of my dress.
Christopher stopped dead on the stage stairs, staring up at the giant screens in absolute horror. His mouth opened, but no words came out.
Luke tapped the tablet again.
The video shifted.
Now, high-resolution bank transfer logs appeared on the screens. Millions of dollars in wire transfers flowing from Albright Global’s primary operations account directly into offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Brenda Vance.
"Over the last twenty-four months," Luke’s voice boomed over the speakers, cold and relentless, "Miss Vance hasn't just stolen my mother's clothes and jewelry. She has systematically siphoned over twelve million dollars from company reserves with the full knowledge and signing authority of my father."
The media cameras were flashing frantically now. Reporters were shouting into their headsets, broadcasting the live feed to over two million online viewers across national news networks.
Luke looked directly at his father, then turned his gaze down to Brenda.
"My mother stayed silent for two years because she believed in loyalty," Luke said softly. "She believed in giving a husband a chance to remember who he was. But tonight, you brought his mistress to a public charity gala, dressed in my mother's skin, calling her 'Mrs. Albright.'"
Luke picked up his tablet, walked to the edge of the stage, and looked down at Brenda with absolute contempt.
"Now you can support my father yourself," Luke said into the microphone.

He dropped the mic.
The heavy iron object hit the stage floor with a sharp, thundering THUD that echoed through the ballroom speakers like a gunshot.
