Chapter 5 - The $68 Million Secret

Midnight. The quiet of our Beverly Hills study felt like a sanctuary after the storm at the St. Regis.

The floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooked the illuminated swimming pool, but inside, the light came only from two green banker lamps illuminating the massive oak desk that had once belonged to my father, Thomas Vance.

Christopher stood near the heavy oak doors, his tuxedo jacket tossed onto a armchair, his tie undone, his collar open. He looked like a man who had aged twenty years in a single evening.

"You ruined me, Vivian," Christopher spat, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and unbridled rage. "Do you have any idea what you did tonight?! The stock dropped thirty percent in after-hours trading! The board called an emergency meeting for 8:00 AM tomorrow! I am going to be removed as CEO!"

I sat calmly behind my father’s desk, sipping a cup of chamomile tea that Mrs. Higgins had brought me. Luke sat in the leather armchair beside me, his tablet open on his knees.

"You ruined yourself, Christopher," I said coldly. "You brought a snake into our home, gave her my clothes, gave her my money, and allowed her to put poison in my food. You thought I was weak because I stayed quiet. You mistook my patience for ignorance."

"I didn't know she poisoned you!" Christopher yelled, taking two aggressive steps toward the desk. "I swear to God, Vivian! I thought she just gave you a mild sleeping pill so you wouldn't cause a scene at the gala! I didn't know!"

Luke raised his head from his tablet, his eyes fixing on Christopher like two sharp blades.

"You knew," Luke said calmly. "You bought the prescription from a private doctor in Mexico six weeks ago, Father. The digital receipts are saved under your personal offshore corporate account, Albright Investments LLC."

Christopher froze, his eyes widening in pure horror. "How... how did you get those files?"

"Did you really think I was just playing computer games in my room for the past three years?" Luke asked with a faint, mocking smile. "I built the security protocol for your company’s internal network when I was fifteen. You never bothered to change the master administrator password."

Luke tapped a key on his tablet.

The large flat-screen monitor mounted on the study wall flared to life.

A vast, complex folder tree appeared, labeled in bold red letters:

PROJECT PHENIX: FORENSIC AUDIT & VANCE TRUST LIQUIDATION TOTAL DISCREPANCY: $68,412,090.00

Christopher gasped, his breath catching in his throat as if he had been struck in the chest with a sledgehammer.

"The sixty-eight million dollar file..." Christopher whispered, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of a leather chair. "My father... your father... that was settled fifteen years ago!"

"It was never settled," I said, leaning forward and resting my elbows on the desk. "When my father died, he left seventy percent of Vance Enterprises to me in a protected trust. You convinced me to merge Vance Enterprises with your failing firm to create Albright Global. You told me the trust money was safe."

I pulled a thick leather-bound folder from the bottom desk drawer and slammed it onto the oak surface.

"For fifteen years, you’ve been secretly moving capital out of my father’s original trust into phantom companies in Panama and Switzerland," I continued. "Sixty-eight million dollars stolen from my inheritance, used to fund your fake lifestyle, your private jet leases, and Brenda’s luxury apartments."

"It was company money!" Christopher roared frantically. "I built Albright Global!"

"You didn't build anything!" Luke countered, standing up from his chair. "Every single profitable deal Albright Global signed in the last decade was executed using Mom’s father’s original patent licenses! Without her money, you were nothing more than a failed stockbroker with a big mouth!"

Luke turned the tablet screen toward Christopher.

"This sixty-eight million dollar file isn't just financial records," Luke revealed. "It’s a fully documented forensic audit signed by the top independent accounting firm in California, along with sworn affidavits from three of your former accountants. We sent a copy to the Securities and Exchange Commission at 9:00 PM tonight."

Christopher’s knees buckled. He sank onto the floor, staring up at us with empty, terrified eyes.

"You... you’re going to put me in prison?" he whimpered, his pride completely shattered.

"No, Christopher," I said, leaning back in my chair with a quiet, icy composure. "I’m not putting you in prison. The United States government is."
