Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

The autumn air crisp and clear, smelling of fallen leaves and woodsmoke.
In the backyard of our craftsman home, fairy lights strung through the oak trees cast a warm, golden glow over the small gathering of close friends and family. Eleanor and Arthur Vance laughed as they watched Maisie run across the lawn in a bright yellow dress, chasing a shimmering cloud of soap bubbles blown by Lucas.
Maisie turned two years old properly today.
There were no pageant judges, no fake smiles, no toxic relatives demanding perfection, and no dark secrets hidden behind closed doors. There was only a bright blue-and-yellow birthday cake, candles flickering in the gentle evening breeze, and a family built on unconditional love, safety, and trust.
Lucas walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder as we watched our daughter laugh.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Vance-to-be?" he whispered, kissing my cheek.
I smiled, turning around in his embrace and looking down at the sparkling diamond ring on my finger.
"I was just thinking," I said softly, resting my hand against his chest, "that the best kind of family isn't the one you're born into. It's the one you choose."

Across the lawn, Maisie let out a joyful squeal and ran toward us, her little arms outstretched. Lucas and I both knelt down, catching her together and lifting her up into the air as she giggled with pure delight.
The past was behind us. Our future was finally our own.
