Chapter 7 - The Arrests and Community Backlash

The grand jury indictment came down on a Friday morning.

Warren, Elaine, and Tessa were formally charged with multiple felony counts, including felony child abuse resulting in bodily harm, administering a controlled substance to a minor, reckless endangerment, bank fraud, and grand larceny.

Local news crews staked out the county courthouse as Warren and Elaine were led out in handcuffs and orange jumpsuits, their wrists shackled, their heads bowed low to avoid the camera flashes. The local community, once blind to their polished southern-gentility facade, turned on them with merciless fury. Local businesses cancelled all advertising with the family, and online forums buzzed with outrage over the horrifying details of Maisie's night in the dumpster.

Tessa, who had cooperated with the district attorney's office, received a plea deal for probation and mandatory counseling, but her social standing in the town was completely destroyed. Her husband had already filed for divorce, taking full custody of Sadie and moving out of the county to escape the toxic fallout.

I watched the news report from our living room couch, with Maisie playing happily with building blocks on the carpet beside me.

"They got what they deserved," Lucas said, setting a bowl of popcorn on the coffee table.

"Yeah," I replied quietly. "They did."

There was no sense of triumph, only a profound sense of closure. The monsters who had haunted my entire life, who had treated human beings as disposable commodities for their own vanity and greed, were finally locked away where they could never hurt another child.
