Chapter 3 - The Engagement Broken

The boxes were stacked high in the back of Lucas's SUV. Every single toy, every piece of clothing, every memory of Maisie's nursery had been packed away in less than an hour. We had changed the locks on the apartment door using a locksmith and our legal co-ownership clause, effectively locking Warren and Elaine out of their own rental investment space.

We drove to Lucas’s house—a quiet, sunlit craftsman home on the edge of town that smelled of cedar and coffee, far away from the toxic shadow of the Holloway estate.

As we carried the final boxes inside, Lucas stopped in the hallway, pulling a small velvet box out of his coat pocket.

It was our engagement ring box. The diamond sparkled under the hallway light, untouched by the nightmare of the past twenty-four hours.

"Chloe," Lucas said softly, his voice heavy with emotion. "I know yesterday was supposed to be our celebration. I know my parents saw a side of your family that no one should ever have to witness. And if you need to call off the wedding, if you need to focus entirely on healing and protecting Maisie... I will understand. I am with you, no matter what."

I looked at the ring, then up into Lucas’s steady, loving eyes. He had stood between my father and me at the loading dock without a second thought. He had held Maisie as if she were his own flesh and blood.

"Lucas," I whispered, a tear slipping down my cheek, "my family is broken. They are toxic, narcissistic monsters who care about nothing except status and control. But you... you and Maisie are my family now."

I took the box from his hands, opened it, and slid the ring onto my finger myself.

"We are getting married," I said firmly. "Just not here. And definitely not with them."

That evening, Lucas’s parents—Arthur and Eleanor Vance—came over. I braced myself for the inevitable. They were prominent, respected members of the community; surely, seeing my family's criminal behavior would make them want to distance their son from the scandal.

Instead, Eleanor walked straight through the front door, bypassed the living room, and walked directly into the guest bedroom where Maisie was sleeping peacefully in a temporary crib. She stood over the sleeping toddler for a long moment, gently smoothing a stray curl from her forehead. When she walked back out, her eyes were shining with unshed tears.

"Arthur and I spoke to the detective on the case," Eleanor said, her voice shaking with quiet fury. "What your parents did is beyond comprehension. It is pure, unadulterated evil."

"We want you to know," Arthur added, putting a warm, heavy hand on Lucas's shoulder, "that our family stands with you and Chloe. Whatever legal representation you need, whatever financial support to fight them in court—consider it handled."

I felt a massive weight lift off my shoulders. For the first time in my life, I wasn't fighting alone against the Holloway dynasty. I had a real family now. And Warren and Elaine were about to find out what happens when you awaken a sleeping giant.
