Chapter 2 - The Silent Vault

The bank on 5th Street was a fortress of marble and polished brass, a cold contrast to the chaos Callie felt inside. She held Geneva’s hand, the old woman walking with a surprising, rhythmic gait that contradicted the "frail" image Joel had painted.

Inside the vault, the air was thick with the scent of stagnant paper. The attendant, a man with tired eyes, checked the identification Callie had hastily forged using the documents from the suitcase. When the heavy, rectangular box was placed on the table, Geneva didn't hesitate. She entered the combination—4-2-0-7—and the lid clicked open with a sound like a gunshot.

It wasn't gold. It wasn't cash. It was a thick, leather-bound ledger dating back twenty years, accompanied by a stack of cassette tapes labeled with dates. As Callie flipped through the pages, her stomach turned. The entries weren't just financial records; they were detailed accounts of Joel’s early gambling debts, which Geneva had been quietly paying off for years to "protect the family name."

Pinned to the back was a document that made Callie’s blood run cold: a pre-signed, notarized document giving Joel total control over the Fairview Estate—dated two years before the first mention of Geneva’s Alzheimer’s.

"They didn't just want the money," Callie whispered, looking at her grandmother. "They were waiting for you to lose your memory so they could rewrite history."

Geneva looked at the ledger, her expression shifting from clarity back to a hazy, distant fog. "The house, Callie... the house is a key. Not the bricks. The foundation."
