Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The blue and red lights of the police cruisers danced against the weathered siding of the Fairview house, turning the interior into a strobe-lit stage. As the officers burst through the doors, Joel dropped the crowbar, the metallic clatter echoing like a gavel. His bravado vanished instantly, replaced by a frantic, stumbling attempt to justify his presence.

“It’s a family dispute!” Joel shouted, hands raised. “She’s trespassing! My mother is mentally unfit; she doesn't know what she’s doing!”

Officer Miller, a man with a stern jawline who had been tipped off by Callie earlier that day, ignored him. He walked straight to Geneva. “Ma’am, are you injured?”

Geneva stepped forward, her posture regal despite her worn slippers. “Officer, I am perfectly sound of mind. My son and daughter-in-law have been systematically defrauding my estate and administering unauthorized sedatives to keep me quiet. I have the evidence right here.” She gestured to the iron-bound box in Callie’s arms.

Dakota tried to interject, her voice reaching a shrill, desperate pitch as she accused Callie of manipulation, but her phone—which she was still holding—was seized by the police as evidence. The footage on it, meant to record Callie’s "breakdown," actually captured the entire illegal entry by Joel and Dakota, proving their premeditated intent.

As they were handcuffed and led out to the cruisers, the neighbors gathered on the street, watching the downfall of the couple who had long paraded their borrowed wealth around the neighborhood. Callie stood on the porch, the weight of the box in her hands feeling lighter than air. She looked at her grandmother, whose eyes were wet, not with confusion, but with the quiet, profound relief of a long-imprisoned spirit finally breathing fresh air.
