Chapter 5 - The Estate Ambush

While Garrick was sitting in a holding cell downtown answering uncomfortable questions from federal prosecutors, his mother was about to receive a very unpleasant wake-up call at the family estate.

Julian decided it was time to retrieve my personal belongings, legal documents, and the few sentimental items left behind from my life before the marriage—including the photo albums of my late grandparents and my childhood keepsakes.

We didn't just send movers. We sent a convoy.

At noon on Wednesday, two massive moving trucks escorted by three private security SUVs and a Harris County sheriff's deputy rolled up the long, tree-lined driveway of the mansion.

Miriam had apparently been entertaining members of her elite church committee—three wealthy, heavily bejeweled matrons who sipped iced tea on the veranda while gossiping about local charities. When the convoy pulled onto the pristine lawn, crushing several of Miriam’s prized rosebushes under their heavy tires, Miriam dropped her teacup, shattering porcelain across the flagstone patio.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Miriam shrieked, marching down the front steps, her face contorted with righteous fury as she pointed a manicured finger at the lead security guard. "Get these vulgar trucks off my property immediately! Do you know who I am? I demand to speak to—"

The heavy passenger door of the lead SUV swung open, and I stepped out.

I was wearing a sharp, tailored white linen pantsuit, dark oversized sunglasses hiding the lingering exhaustion in my eyes, and my hair styled in a sleek, powerful bob. Dr. Vance had cleared me for a brief, supervised excursion, provided I moved slowly and avoided physical stress.

Miriam froze mid-sentence, her jaw dropping open as if she were staring back at a ghost.

"Audrey?" she stammered, her voice losing its venomous edge for a fraction of a second before her natural arrogance flooded back. "You—you ungrateful little tramp! How dare you show your face here after the damage your criminal brother caused? Where is Garrick? What have you done with my son?!"

I didn't answer her. I simply walked slowly up the steps, stopping a few feet away from her. The two private security guards stood silently behind me like stone pillars.

"Your son is currently downtown, Miriam," I said, my voice carrying a cool, razor-sharp clarity that echoed across the courtyard. "He's busy explaining to federal investigators why he embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from his company to fund your lavish lifestyle."

Miriam's face drained of color, turning the shade of spoiled milk. "You're lying... that's a lie! My son is an upstanding Christian man—"

"Your son is a coward," I interrupted coldly. "And you are a hypocritical monster who thinks God gives you a free pass to abuse people behind closed doors. We are here to pack my things. And don't bother trying to stop us. The deputy standing by the gate has a court-ordered repossession and asset-freezing writ that covers everything in this house."

Behind Miriam, her church friends stood up slowly from their patio chairs, whispering frantically among themselves, their eyes widening in shock as they realized the scandalous reality of the woman they had spent years admiring.

"You can't do this!" Miriam shrieked, lunging forward as if she wanted to claw my eyes out.

The two security guards stepped forward instantly, gently but firmly blocking her path with unyielding force. Miriam stumbled back, glaring at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"Enjoy the house while you can, Miriam," I whispered, turning my back on her as the moving crew marched past her into the foyer. "Because by the end of the week, the bank is going to lock the doors, and you'll have nowhere left to hide."
