Chapter 9 - Karma's Final Blow

While I was building my new life in Austin, the final chapters of Garrick and Miriam's descent were quietly being written in Houston.

Federal prosecutors threw the book at Garrick. Pleading guilty to multiple counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate tax evasion, he was sentenced to twelve years in a federal correctional facility in West Texas with no possibility of parole for the first eight years. The golden boy of Apex Capital spent his days folding laundry in an institutional uniform, forgotten by the colleagues who once flattered him and abandoned by the friends who feared association with his disgrace.

Miriam’s fate was arguably even more agonizing for a woman of her boundless vanity.

Stripped of her home, her embezzled funds, and her social standing, she was forced to sell off her remaining designer jewelry and couture wardrobe just to pay for a cramped, depressing one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of Beaumont. Her church committee completely excommunicated her, refusing even to answer her calls when she attempted to beg for financial assistance.

Reduced to living on a meager social security stipend, she spent her days sitting alone in her drab living room, staring at the walls of her tiny apartment, surrounded by the deafening silence of absolute isolation. The woman who had once demanded that others bow to her rigid, hypocritical standards of righteousness was left utterly destitute, forgotten, and profoundly alone.

They had tried to destroy me. Instead, they had merely cleared the debris from my path, allowing me to step into the truest, strongest version of myself.
