Chapter 7 - The Divorce Trial

By early autumn, the Texas heat had finally broken, replaced by crisp, golden breezes and clear blue skies. My physical health had rebounded remarkably under Dr. Vance’s care. The surgical incisions had healed cleanly, my strength had returned, and the lingering phantom pains in my chest had faded into a dull, manageable memory.

The final divorce proceedings took place in a sunlit courtroom on the sixth floor of the downtown civil courthouse.

Garrick, brought in from the detention facility in a standard orange jumpsuit and wrist restraints, looked a decade older. His hair was unstyled, his face gaunt, and his arrogant, self-satisfied posture replaced by a broken, hunched slouch. He didn't dare make eye contact as I walked into the courtroom, flanked by Julian and my powerhouse legal team led by Victoria Vance, one of Houston's top matrimonial litigators.

Judge Harrison, a stern-faced jurist with decades on the bench, reviewed the final settlement agreement with a critical eye.

"This is one of the most comprehensive asset forfeiture and dissolution filings this court has ever reviewed," Judge Harrison announced, looking up from the documents to peer directly at Garrick. "Mr. Bennett, you have stipulated to gross financial misconduct, spousal abandonment during a life-threatening medical crisis, and fraudulent encumbrance of marital assets."

Garrick swallowed hard, his voice cracking as he spoke to the microphone. "Yes, Your Honor... I accept the terms."

"Good," Judge Harrison said sharply, slamming his gavel down with a crisp, echoing thwack. "The marriage between Audrey Bennett and Garrick Bennett is hereby dissolved. All remaining marital assets, including the estate in River Oaks, the vehicles, and remaining investment portfolios, are awarded one hundred percent to Mrs. Bennett as sole restitution for financial and psychological damages. Furthermore, a permanent restraining order is issued prohibiting Mr. Bennett from ever attempting contact with Mrs. Bennett again."

He turned his gaze toward me, his expression softening into genuine warmth. "Mrs. Bennett, you walked through a nightmare. I pray your future brings you the peace and healing you so richly deserve."

"Thank you, Your Honor," I replied, my voice steady, clear, and ringing with absolute authority in the quiet courtroom.

As I walked out of the courthouse doors into the bright Houston sunshine, Julian was waiting for me at the bottom of the stone steps, holding a bottle of sparkling cider and smiling broadly.

"It's over," Julian said, wrapping his arms around me in a fierce, protective embrace.

"No, Julian," I whispered, looking up at the endless blue sky above us. "It's just beginning."
