Chapter 2 - The Donor Code

The room fell so quiet that the rapid, irregular beeping of the fetal heart monitor sounded like hammer blows against the silence.

Elias’s hands slowly unclasped from his hair. His eyes locked onto the crisp white paper Nurse Elena held out toward him. The anger that had boiled inside his chest for hours—the bitter, agonizing fury that had driven him to tear through the hospital corridors—evaporated, replaced by a cold, suffocating dread.

Sarah’s desperate sobs softened into shallow, hitching breaths. She lay back against the thin hospital pillows, her hands clutching her belly defensively, her tear-streaked face pale and hollow.

"Read it, Elias," Elena said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Read the line highlighted in red."

Elias took a trembling step forward. The security guards who had been pinning his arms lowered their hands, sensing the violent shift in the room's atmosphere. With fingers that shook uncontrollably, Elias took the file from Elena.

His eyes scanned the top of the document: APEX REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH & REGENERATIVE MEDICINE – CONFIDENTIAL EMBRYO TRANSFER LOG.

Below Sarah’s name and medical record number was a section labeled GENETIC DONOR SPECIFICATION.

Instead of Elias’s patient ID, or the standard code for an anonymous donor bank, the line read:

DONOR ID: SUBJECT 001-VANCE (RESTRICTED LEGAL DIRECTIVE) AUTHORIZED BY: DR. JONATHAN VANCE – APEX MEDICAL BOARD

Elias’s breath caught violently in his throat. "Dr. Vance...?"

"You didn't go to a standard fertility clinic, Elias," Elena said, stepping closer and lowering her voice so the guards outside the door couldn't hear. "Six months ago, when Sarah had her minor laparoscopic procedure at the Apex Pavilion, she was told it was a simple cyst removal. But this file shows she was subjected to an unconsented, illegal embryo implantation."

Sarah gasped, her eyes widening in sheer terror. "What?! No... no! Dr. Vance said it was just a diagnostic procedure! He told me I was completely fine!"

"He lied to you," Elena said, tears finally spilling over her own eyelashes. "Dr. Vance wasn't treating you, Sarah. He was using you. Apex has been running an illicit, off-the-books human breeding trial. They’ve been implanting high-value synthetic and elite donor profiles into unsuspecting patients under the guise of routine care."

Elias dropped the file. The pages fluttered to the floor like autumn leaves.

He looked at Sarah. The woman he had spent the last two hours screaming at. The woman he had accused of tearing his heart out and destroying their marriage. She hadn't cheated on him. She hadn't betrayed their vows. She was an innocent victim of a nightmare beyond comprehension.

"Sarah..." Elias whispered, his voice cracking into a ragged sob.

He sank to his knees beside her hospital bed, grabbing her cold hand and pressing it against his forehead. Heavy tears streamed down his face, soaking into the white bedsheets.

"Sarah, I’m so sorry... Oh God, Sarah, please forgive me... I didn't know... I didn't know!"

Sarah reached out with her other hand, her fingers tangling in Elias’s hair. The betrayal and shock were still fresh, but seeing the genuine horror and repentance in her husband's eyes shattered the wall between them.

"Elias..." she wept, pulling his head closer. "What did they do to me? What did they put inside me?"

Before Elena could answer, the electronic lock on the room’s double doors clicked sharply.

The door swung open, and three tall men in dark charcoal suits walked into the room. Behind them stood Dr. Jonathan Vance himself—a silver-haired man in his late fifties, impeccably groomed, wearing a gold-buttoned lab coat and an expression of icy, detached command.

"Nurse Elena," Dr. Vance said, his voice smooth and cold like polished marble. "I believe you are holding property that belongs to the executive board."
