Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary in the Shadows

The atmosphere in the room turned instantly lethal.
The two security guards who had previously tried to restrain Elias immediately snapped to attention, saluting Dr. Vance. The three men in dark suits stepped forward, positioning themselves between the bed and the door, effectively trapping everyone inside.
"Dr. Vance," Nurse Elena said, trying to stand tall despite the visible shaking of her knees. "This file... what you’ve done to Sarah... it’s a federal crime. It’s human experimentation."
Dr. Vance smiled thinly, taking a pair of gold-rimmed reading glasses from his pocket and slipping them into his coat.
"A crime, Elena? Or a masterpiece of modern medicine?" Vance asked softly. "Mrs. Sterling was unable to conceive naturally. We simply provided her with a genetic baseline that far exceeds anything her husband could ever contribute. She should be thanking me."
"You son of a bitch!" Elias roared.
He lunged from his knees, charging at Vance with raw, unadulterated fury. But before he could reach the older doctor, the two dark-suited men stepped into his path. One delivered a swift, brutal strike to Elias’s solar plexus, while the other twisted his arm behind his back, slamming him hard against the cold linoleum floor.
"Elias!" Sarah screamed, trying to scramble out of the bed, but the third suit stepped forward and pushed her back by her shoulders.
"Keep her comfortable," Vance instructed casually. "Prepare room 402 for immediate transfer. Mrs. Sterling will be relocated to our private wing at the Apex Facility across town. We cannot risk her... delicate condition being exposed to public panic."
"She isn't going anywhere with you!" Elena shouted.
Without warning, Elena grabbed a heavy metal tray of surgical instruments from the side cart and hurled it straight into the face of the guard holding Elias. The metal struck the guard across his eye, shattering his nose in a spray of blood.
The guard grunted, dropping Elias.
"Run!" Elena screamed, jamming her foot against the manual emergency release pedal under the wall cabinet.
Red alarm lights burst to life along the ceiling, and a loud, piercing siren began to wail throughout the hospital wing. The automated fire doors began to slide shut.
Elias didn't hesitate. He scrambled to his feet, grabbed the guard who was holding Sarah, and drove his shoulder into the man's ribs, throwing him against the wall monitor.
"Sarah, get up!" Elias yelled, gathering her into his arms. Though she was seven months pregnant, adrenaline gave Elias superhuman strength. He lifted her off the bed, clutching her tightly against his chest.
"Elena, come on!" Elias shouted over the deafening siren.
"Go out through the service stairwell!" Elena ordered, grabbing the medical file from the floor and thrusting it into Elias’s jacket pocket. "I’ll trigger the security lockdown on this floor from the nurse station to block Vance’s men! Go!"
"Elena—"
"JUST GO!"
Elias turned and sprinted out of the room, carrying Sarah through the chaos of flashing red lights and screaming hospital staff. Behind them, Dr. Vance’s cold voice echoed over the intercom:
"Containment protocol active. Do not let the Sterling family leave the building."
Elias threw his body weight against the crash bar of the service exit door, tumbling out into the rain-slicked concrete stairwell. He bolted down six flights of stairs, his heart hammering in his chest, his hands gripping Sarah tightly as she held onto his neck for dear life.
Bursting through the basement exit, they emerged into the stormy night alleyway behind the hospital. Rain hit them like cold needles. Elias ducked into the shadow of a industrial dumpster, setting Sarah gently on her feet inside the passenger seat of his parked SUV.

He slammed the door shut, scrambled into the driver's seat, and turned the ignition. The engine roared to life just as three armed Apex guards burst into the alleyway.
Elias slammed the gear into reverse, spun the wheel, and floored the accelerator, disappearing into the blinding rain of the midnight city.
