Chapter 4 - The Hidden Ledger

The windshield wipers beat back and forth in a violent rhythm as the SUV navigated the winding, unpaved mountain road twenty miles north of the city.
Inside the cabin, the heater blasted warm air, but Sarah was still shivering uncontrollably. Elias had wrapped his wool coat around her shoulders. He kept one hand firmly on the steering wheel and reached over with his other to hold her shaking fingers.
"We’re almost there," Elias said softly, his voice trembling with exhaustion and remorse. "My old college roommate, Marcus... he has a hunting cabin out here. It’s not on any property registry. Vance won't find us tonight."
Sarah didn't answer right away. She looked out the window into the pitch-black pine forest, her hand resting over her baby bump.
"Elias..." she whispered softly. "When you screamed at me in that room... I thought my life was over. I thought you hated me."
Elias pulled the car onto a dirt driveway and killed the engine. In the quiet darkness, he turned to face her, grabbing both of her hands, tears welling in his eyes once more.
"I was a fool, Sarah. A blind, arrogant fool," he choked out. "When the doctor told me two months ago that I had a low fertility count, I let my own insecurity rot my mind. When I saw the altered lab results left anonymously in my office mailbox this morning, I let the monster inside me take over. I should have trusted you. I should have protected you. I will spend the rest of my life making this up to you."
Sarah looked into his eyes, seeing the genuine anguish and devotion shining through. She reached up and touched his wet cheek.
"We fight this together," she said firmly. "For our child. Whatever is inside me... it’s still our baby, Elias."
They walked up the steps of the log cabin, where Marcus—a tall, sharp-eyed man with computer monitors lining his living room—was waiting for them.
"I heard the police scanner," Marcus said, locking the heavy wooden door behind them. "Apex issued a local law enforcement bulletin claiming you abducted a high-risk psychiatric patient, Elias. Vance is pulling every dirty string he has."
"Look at this," Elias said, pulling the rain-soaked medical file from his jacket and laying it on Marcus’s desk.
Marcus put on his glasses, analyzing the documents under a bright desk lamp. He pulled up an encrypted database on his main monitor, typing furiously as he cross-referenced the donor code: SUBJECT 001-VANCE.
After ten minutes of total silence, Marcus stopped typing. His face turned pale beneath the glow of the screen.
"My God..." Marcus murmured.
"What is it?" Sarah asked, leaning against Elias.
"Subject 001-VANCE isn't a random genetic donor," Marcus said, turning his monitor toward them. "It's a direct genetic clone profile of Dr. Jonathan Vance’s late son, Julian Vance, who died in a car crash ten years ago. Vance has been using Apex to find perfect surrogates among his patient base to secretly resurrect his son's bloodline without their knowledge."
Sarah gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.
"And that's not the worst part," Marcus added, his voice dropping into a dark register. "To ensure the genetic line survives, the protocol dictates that once the child is born, the mother is rendered mentally incapacitated through targeted chemical sedatives... so Apex can claim legal guardianship of the baby."

Elias’s hands curled into rock-hard fists. "He isn't taking our baby. He isn't touching my wife ever again."
"We need the master encryption key to prove this in court," Marcus said. "And that key is stored in only one place: the central vault inside the Apex Bio-Genetics Tower."
