Chapter 7 - The Federal Siege

The storm outside raged like a wild beast as Elias slammed his foot onto the gas pedal of Croft’s police cruiser, following three emergency medical vans down the winding mountain road.

His phone buzzed on the dashboard. He slammed the speaker button.

"Elias!" Marcus’s panicked voice came through. "The tactical team cleared the cabin! Vance’s men were arrested, but the stress triggered acute early labor! Nurse Elena is with her, but Sarah’s blood pressure is spiking out of control!"

"I'm five minutes away!" Elias screamed into the phone. "Hold on, Sarah! Please, hold on!"

When the police vehicle screeched to a halt outside the cabin, Elias threw the door open and sprinted up the wooden steps, bursting into the master bedroom.

The room had been turned into an emergency medical station. Nurse Elena was kneeling beside the bed, monitoring a portable ultrasound machine, while two paramedics worked frantically to stabilize Sarah’s IV lines.

Sarah was drenched in sweat, her face pale, her hands gripping the bedsheets as a violent contraction hit her.

"Elias..." she gasped, her voice barely a whisper when she saw him run into the room.

"I'm here! I'm here, baby!" Elias fell to his knees beside her, grabbing her hands and pressing his forehead against hers. "I brought the evidence. Vance is in handcuffs. It's over. We’re safe."

"Elias..." Elena said urgently, looking at the monitor screen. "The umbilical cord is wrapped around the baby’s neck. We can't wait for the hospital storm transport. We have to deliver this baby right now, or we'll lose them both."

Sarah squeezed Elias’s hand with surprising strength, her eyes locked into his. "Elias... promise me... if something happens to me..."

"Nothing is going to happen to you!" Elias sobbed, kissing her face, her eyes, her lips. "We are raising this baby together! Do you hear me?! You and me! We are a family!"

Elena looked at the paramedic. "Prepare the local anesthetic. Sarah... on the next contraction, I need you to push with everything you’ve got."

Outside, the storm cracked with a thunderous roar, lightning illuminating the bedroom in brilliant white light.

"Now, Sarah! PUSH!" Elena commanded.

Sarah screamed, her hands digging into Elias’s shoulders as she gave everything she had left in her body. Elias held her, pouring his soul into hers, whispering words of love and strength into her ear.

"Keep pushing, Sarah! He's almost here! He's almost here!" Elias cried.

With one final, desperate push, the room filled with the sharp, loud, beautiful sound of a newborn baby crying out into the world.
