Chapter 3 - Gaslighting

The next morning, the sun rose over the hospital, but the light brought no clarity. Rachel was summoned to the Administrative Suite by 9:00 a.m.

Daniel Mercer was sitting in a high-backed leather chair, looking every bit the grieving widower-in-waiting. His eyes were red-rimmed, his suit impeccable. Dr. Cole sat beside him, his demeanor professional, almost paternal.

"Rachel," Daniel said, standing up. He had a disarming, charismatic smile that didn't reach his eyes. "I understand there was a bit of a misunderstanding last night regarding Noah’s birth documentation."

"It wasn't a misunderstanding, Mr. Mercer," Rachel said, standing stiffly in the center of the plush carpeted room. "It was an alteration of a legal record."

"My wife is recovering from a traumatic labor," Daniel continued, ignoring her. "She’s prone to confusion. She heard the bells in her head, and apparently, our daughter has been coached to repeat her delusions. It’s quite harmful, really."

Cole sighed, shaking his head. "Rachel, I’ve already spoken to HR. You’ve been working double shifts for weeks. Everyone has noticed the signs of burnout. Paranoia, difficulty with complex data, memory lapses."

"Are you accusing me of being unstable?" Rachel’s voice stayed steady, though her hands were hidden behind her back, fists clenched.

"We are expressing concern," Cole said smoothly. "We’d like you to take a week of paid leave. No questions asked. Just hand over the documentation you 'recovered' from the waste bins, and we can put this behind us."

"I don't have anything," Rachel lied, her heart racing.

Daniel stepped forward, invading her personal space. The scent of him—cigar smoke and cold arrogance—filled her senses. "Don't lie to me. I know you were looking at the server logs. I know you think you’ve found something. But let me be very clear: there is no thirteen-minute window. There is only the time on the certificate, which is currently being filed. If you produce anything that contradicts that, you will be destroyed. Not just fired—sued for defamation, stripped of your license, and buried in legal fees for the rest of your life."

He leaned in, whispering, "Think about Emma. She’s a clever girl, but she’s young. It would be a shame if her mother suddenly couldn't afford her school, her home, or her life."

Rachel looked at the man who would steal from his own son—and his own mother—and felt the fear subside, replaced by a cold, surgical clarity.

"You’re right, Mr. Mercer," Rachel said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Thirteen minutes isn't much time. But it’s enough for the truth to catch up with you."

She turned and walked out of the office, the threat hanging in the air like a guillotine blade. She knew she was marked now. But as she walked back onto the floor, she saw Emma sitting in the waiting area, watching the door. The little girl didn't look like a child in the middle of a delusion. She looked like a girl waiting for her only ally to return.

Rachel knew what she had to do next: find the grandmother before the medicine did its work.
