Chapter 8 - The Grandmother’s Revelation

The chaos in the ICU forced the medical team to pause. During the frantic efforts to stabilize Elena, Rachel leaned close, using the noise of the monitors as cover.

"He's trying to stop your heart," she whispered into Elena’s ear.

The old woman’s eyes snapped open. She gathered her remaining strength, her hand gripping a pen she had been hiding under the sheets. She reached out and scribbled on the only paper within reach—a patient chart.

12:07. My will... void if coerced.

She shoved the paper into Rachel’s hand.

"The trust," Elena mouthed, her voice a ghost of a sound. "The lawyer... Mr. Henderson. Call him."

Rachel didn't wait. She backed out of the room as the medical team flooded in. She retreated to the fire stairwell, pulling out her phone. She didn't call the police—not yet. She called Henderson, the Mercer family’s longtime attorney. She read him the note.

"The timeline is compromised, Mr. Henderson," she said, her voice steady. "Daniel and Dr. Cole are attempting to accelerate the death of the beneficiary to secure an illegal inheritance. I have the evidence. I have the original birth time. And I have a dying declaration."

"Bring it to me," Henderson replied, his voice grave. "If this is true, the Mercer estate will be frozen until a probate court can verify the birth."
