Chapter 6 - The Digital Paper Trail

Back in the basement offices of the hospital, the air was thick with the smell of overheated servers. Rachel found David, the IT specialist, hunched over a keyboard, his face illuminated by the harsh white light of code scripts.

"I found it, Rachel," he said, not looking up. "I tracked the override. It wasn't just a manual edit. Cole used a script to spoof the hospital’s master clock. For thirteen minutes, every digital record in the building—the monitors, the logs, the birth time sync—was running exactly thirteen minutes ahead."

"So, the time he entered wasn't just a lie," Rachel said. "He effectively hacked reality."

"Exactly. But here’s the problem. He’s wiped his digital footprint. I managed to pull the raw server logs, but they're encrypted. I need the decryption key from the hospital’s primary admin node."

"Which is in the CEO’s office," Rachel added, her mind racing.

"Which is guarded by security 24/7," David countered. "Rachel, this goes deeper than just the Mercers. The hospital administration has been hiding financial deficits for years. If the Mercer trust collapses, they go bankrupt. They’re protecting themselves, not just the doctor."

Rachel looked at the screen, at the lines of code that represented Noah’s life—and the lives of everyone they were trampling. She realized that she wasn't just fighting a greedy father; she was fighting the entire institutional structure of the hospital.

"Then we don't go through the admin," Rachel said, a new resolve forming in her eyes. "We go through the insurance billing. Every time the clock syncs, there's a timestamp on the packet data sent to the insurance companies. They can't delete those, because that’s how they get paid."

"That’s a brilliant pivot," David said, his eyes widening. "But it will take time to dump those files."

"Then we buy time," Rachel said, already planning her next move. "I need you to keep that link open. Don't let them know we’ve found the encryption gap. If they think I’m still just looking at bracelets, they won't suspect I’m looking at the money."

As she walked out into the cool night air of the hospital corridor, she heard the overhead page: Code Blue, ICU, Room 502.
