Chapter 7 - The Siege of the ICU

The Code Blue call was a frantic, discordant siren that echoed through the corridors. Rachel pushed through the double doors of the ICU, her pulse hammering in her ears. She saw Dr. Cole standing over Elena’s bed, his hands moving with efficient, terrifying calm.

"Step back, Nurse!" a security guard blocked her path.

"I’m the charge nurse for this floor’s sister unit!" Rachel lied, her voice authoritative. She saw the monitors. Elena’s vitals were plummeting. Cole was administering a bolus of potassium—a lethal dose if not monitored, and a common way to induce cardiac arrest in a failing patient.

Rachel didn't hesitate. She grabbed a crash cart, deliberately slamming it into the security guard’s shins, creating a chaotic diversion. As the guard buckled, she lunged forward and hit the emergency override on the ventilator, forcing an intake of air that jolted the monitor’s rhythm.

"She’s crashing!" Rachel screamed. "Get the crash cart here now!"

Cole spun around, his face a mask of rage hidden beneath his professional veneer. "Rachel, get out! You are unauthorized!"

"I'm saving her life, Doctor," she hissed, locking eyes with him. She saw the truth: he wasn't trying to resuscitate her; he was ending the timeline. If Elena died now, the clock on the trust would be set. He needed her gone before the legal window for the inheritance closed.
