Chapter 4 - The Fragile Ledger

By the time I returned home, the house was silent. Daniel was in his study, the blue light of his monitors casting long, distorted shadows across the living room. I moved through the space with calculated quiet, making tea and ensuring the house was pristine.

He emerged at eight, his tie loosened, a scowl etched into his features. He didn't look at my face; he looked at the coffee table, where I had placed the documents for the "family business."

"You finally decided to be reasonable," he muttered, tossing his phone onto the couch. He picked up the files—the ones I had carefully curated to look like full cooperation while actually leading his auditors into a labyrinth of my own creation. "I hope you realize this makes things easier for everyone. Mother is tired of the waiting."

"I realized that fighting was just exhausting, Daniel," I said, keeping my eyes downcast.

He walked over, his hand gripping my chin—firmly, enough to let me know the power dynamic he thought existed. "See? You’re beautiful when you stop struggling."

It took everything in me not to recoil. I focused on the math. I envisioned the spreadsheets in my mind, the way his personal accounts were slowly bleeding into the shell corporation. He was so caught up in the "win"—the prospect of acquiring my apartment and the family business expansion—that he didn't notice the microscopic discrepancies in the ledger. He was embezzling, and he was doing it with a trail that led directly to his own digital signature.

I went to bed, and as he drifted into his heavy, arrogant sleep, I pulled out my laptop under the covers. I moved the final pieces of the digital trap. I had created a ghost entry in the corporate server—a backdoor that would trigger a massive flag in the forensic software the moment the Friday transfer hit.

He thought he was building an empire. He was actually building his own prison cell.
