Chapter 10 - The New Balance Sheet

One year later.

I stood on the balcony of my apartment, looking out at the city skyline. It was the same view I had always loved, but it finally felt like mine again.

I had transitioned into a new role as an independent consultant for high-level white-collar crime investigations. My reputation had grown—the woman who had dismantled the infamous "Vivian & Son" empire had become something of a legend in the financial world. I was no longer an accountant for someone else’s lies; I was a guardian of the truth.

I had learned that some things in life cannot be fixed, only settled. I had settled my ledger. There were no more ghosts in my house, no more bruising on my skin, and no more fear in my heart.

I took a sip of my coffee, feeling the morning sun warm my face. My phone pinged with a new case file—a complex fraud scheme involving a private equity firm. I opened the file, adjusted my glasses, and smiled.

It wasn't a smile for a man. It wasn't a mask for a mother-in-law. It was a smile of genuine, hard-won peace. I started typing, my fingers moving with confidence. The audit was open, the numbers were clear, and for the rest of my life, I would be the one in control of the final tally.

I was free.
