Chapter 9 - The Trial

The trial was brief but brutal. The prosecution presented the audio recordings of Vivian’s threats and the digital trail of the embezzlement. But the most damning evidence was the testimony regarding the night of the assault.

I stood on the witness stand, the purple mark on my cheek long gone, but the memory etched into my testimony. I described the night he struck me, the silence I endured, and the calculated decision to fight back. I didn't speak as a crying victim; I spoke as a woman who had documented every cruelty with the precision of a professional.

When the jury returned, the verdict was unanimous.

Daniel was sentenced to twelve years for financial fraud and assault. Vivian received fifteen, as the mastermind of the entire operation. As they were led away, the courtroom was silent. I didn't look at them. I was already looking at the exit, at the life that was waiting for me outside.

For the first time in years, the weight on my chest was gone. The apartment was safe. My future was mine.
