Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

I was sitting in a park three blocks away when the sirens began to wail in the distance. The sound was a symphony.
My phone vibrated. It was a text from Daniel, sent minutes after I’d left. Where are you? The bank just locked my accounts. What did you do?
I didn't answer. I simply watched as black SUVs converged on our building. From my vantage point, I saw Daniel being led out in handcuffs, his face a mask of confusion and mounting terror. Behind him, Vivian was being escorted by two federal agents, her pristine designer suit rumpled as she screamed incoherently about her "rights."

I felt a phantom ache in my ribs, but for the first time in years, the pain was receding, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity. My phone buzzed again. It was Detective Lena Ortiz. We have them. The evidence was airtight. Come to the station whenever you're ready for your statement.
I stood up, smoothed my skirt, and walked toward the station. I didn't feel like a victim anymore. I felt like a forensic expert who had successfully closed the most difficult audit of her career. The "broken" wife they thought they had left behind was the only person who had ever truly held the keys to their kingdom.
