Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

Friday arrived with a cold, piercing light. Daniel was humming, a sound that grated against my nerves like sandpaper. He spent the morning on back-to-back calls, finalizing the transfer that would move my property's equity into the shell company.
"It’s almost done," he announced, walking into the kitchen. He actually kissed my forehead—a gesture of condescending affection. "Today, we become a real force, Sarah. No more apartment, no more 'your' assets. Everything belongs to the family."
"I’m ready," I said, my voice steady.
He logged into the secure portal. I stood behind him, watching his fingers fly across the keys. He was sloppy. His arrogance had made him lazy; he didn't even use a VPN. He was transferring the funds from the joint account—which he had already partially drained—into the shell corporation he thought he controlled.
Click.
The transfer was initiated.
Simultaneously, I triggered the script I had been writing for months. It didn't just authorize the transfer; it sent a mirror image of every document, every fraudulent invoice, and the entire history of the shell company directly to the federal authorities and the board of the firm he worked for.
"Done," he sighed, leaning back in his chair with a grin. "See? That wasn't so hard."
"No," I said, walking to the door and picking up my coat. "It was actually quite easy."
He looked up, his brow furrowing. "Where are you going?"
"To get a coffee," I said. "And to see a friend."
He didn't stop me. He was too busy celebrating his own perceived brilliance. He didn't see the notification on his own screen—a quiet, subtle prompt that the server was performing a "Routine Integrity Audit."

He didn't realize that in three minutes, his access would be revoked, his bank accounts would be frozen, and the knock at his door wouldn't be for lunch.
I stepped into the elevator, the heavy steel doors sliding shut between me and the monster. I didn't look back. I didn't need to. I knew exactly what was coming next.
