Chapter 4 - The Digital Siege

The basement of St. Jude’s Memorial was a graveyard of broken promises, but it was also the heart of Julian’s operation. While the public saw a world-class institution, the subterranean levels were a hive of illicit pharmaceutical trials. I needed a way in, and I needed an insider.
I found him in the IT department: Marcus, a young analyst who had been tasked with scrubbing the server logs of any evidence of Julian’s unauthorized drug interactions. He was terrified, his hands hovering over his keyboard as if they were singed.
"If he finds out I’ve been looking, I’m dead," Marcus whispered, his eyes darting toward the security camera in the corner of the cubicle.
"He won't find out," I replied, sliding a folder across the desk. It contained not money, but leverage: proof that Julian had been siphoning Marcus’s own pension funds to cover the shortfall of his failing private investments. "He isn't just killing patients, Marcus. He’s cannibalizing the people who keep his lights on. Help me, and you get your future back. Help him, and you go down with the ship when it sinks."

Marcus hesitated for a heartbeat before nodding. He began to dump the entire database—thousands of hours of private footage, financial wire transfers, and the horrifying patient logs of the "Blackwood Project." As the progress bar crawled forward, I felt a grim satisfaction. I wasn't just exposing him; I was documenting his soul.
When I returned to the upper floors, I found Julian in the middle of a screaming match with his CFO. The stock price of his parent company, Vance Health, had just plummeted 40% after a "glitch" I initiated caused his proprietary surgery scheduling software to crash, revealing a massive backlog of failed procedures to the public database. He looked up as I entered, his eyes bloodshot, his composure finally snapping. He didn't see a mother-in-law; he saw the shadow that was devouring his world.
