Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Behind Julian, the sound of sirens finally shattered the silence. It wasn't the local police he had bought; it was the federal authorities I had spent months baiting.

They swarmed the lighthouse grounds, lights flashing, weapons drawn. Julian turned, his arrogance faltering as he realized he was trapped in a pincer movement of his own making. He tried to reach for his weapon, but he realized his own hired mercenaries had already dropped their guns. They had been paid off by the very bank accounts I had seized and redirected—using his own money to ensure his surrender.

He was brought to his knees, not by a bullet, but by the weight of his own crimes. The federal agents read him his rights, his name echoing in the cold night air as a synonym for greed, abuse, and mass malpractice.

I walked down the stairs, leaving the safety of the lighthouse. I stopped directly in front of him. He looked up, his face gaunt, his eyes hollowed out by the realization that he had lost everything.

"The files," he whispered, his voice a broken rasp. "You gave them everything. Every secret, every trial, every death."

"I didn't give them everything," I corrected him, looking down at him with a pity that cut deeper than any insult. "I gave them the truth. The rest? The rest you built yourself, one cruelty at a time."

As they handcuffed him and shoved him into the back of a black sedan, I felt the phantom pain of the bruises I had seen on my daughter’s back finally begin to fade. The monster was contained. The empire was dust. And for the first time, I could breathe.
