Chapter 5 - The Ultrasound of Deception

The day of the scheduled "complication" arrived. Julian had moved the C-section up, claiming medical necessity, but we both knew it was a hit job. He had bribed the anesthesiologist to administer a "lethal cocktail" disguised as an error.
I knew the game. I had been playing it for weeks.
"I’ve arranged for the best specialist to oversee the procedure, Julian," I said, meeting him in the corridor. My tone was saccharine, masking the razor-wire beneath. "Dr. Aris, from the state board. He’s here to 'observe' to ensure everything is perfect."
Julian’s face went white. Dr. Aris wasn't just a specialist; he was the head of the ethics committee I had leaked the files to in Chapter 2. By introducing an outside observer, I had effectively handcuffed Julian. He couldn't kill Mia without doing it in front of the man who held the key to his professional execution.
"That's unnecessary," Julian spat, his hand twitching toward his pocket.
"Oh, but it's not," I replied, stepping into his personal space. I whispered, "The federal authorities have the Blackwood files, Julian. The only reason you aren't in handcuffs yet is because I want you to see your life end before they take your freedom."

I turned and walked into the pre-op room, where Mia lay, terrified. I leaned over and smoothed her hair. "You’re safe," I whispered. "The trap is set. Just keep breathing for the baby."
As they wheeled her into the theater, I watched Julian stand in the observation gallery. He was trapped—not by me, but by his own arrogance, forced to watch as a healthy, thriving child was born under the watchful eyes of the authorities he couldn't bribe.
