Chapter 7 - The Midnight Flight

The sterile lights of the operating theater buzzed, a stark contrast to the chaos unfolding in the lobby. My daughter, Mia, was under local anesthesia, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and hope. As the medical team—now comprised of those I had vetted and hand-picked—began the procedure, I stood in the observation deck, watching not the surgery, but the doors.

My phone vibrated. It was a encrypted signal from my private security team. "The perimeter is breached, but not by the police," the voice hissed. "Julian’s private mercenaries are on the ground. He’s trying one last, desperate extraction."

I didn't panic. I had anticipated that Julian, the man who saw himself as a god of this facility, would have a contingency plan for his own escape. I signaled the team. The plan moved into the final phase.

As the baby’s first cry echoed through the surgical suite—a sound as sharp and beautiful as a bell—I was already moving. I didn't wait for the recovery room. I had coordinated an emergency medical transport team, disguised as a standard transfer protocol. While the authorities were preoccupied with arresting the administrative staff, we whisked Mia and the newborn through the subterranean loading dock.

We drove through the rain-slicked streets of the city, the neon lights blurring into streaks of light. Julian’s black SUVs were tailing us, their headlights carving through the dark like hunting dogs. I took the wheel, driving with a precision that belied my age. I hit the industrial district, weaving through the labyrinth of shipping containers, losing the pursuers in a maze of steel and shadow. We were heading for the coast, where a private vessel awaited.
