Chapter 8 - The Shadow Battle

The safe house was a converted lighthouse on a jagged stretch of coastline, miles from the reach of the city’s corruption. It was here that we finally stopped. Mia, exhausted and recovering from the surgery, clutched her son, Leo, to her chest, her hands no longer shaking.
But the battle wasn't over. Julian was not in handcuffs; he had slipped his guards during the confusion of the raid, using his vast offshore wealth to hire a shadow army. He knew where we were—or he was close enough to smell the scent of our retreat.
He tracked us using the GPS embedded in the very medical equipment I had 'donated' to his hospital. It was a fatal oversight on my part, one I hadn't accounted for. Late at night, the silence of the lighthouse was broken by the crunch of gravel.
I didn't wait for him to kick down the door. I had rigged the perimeter with silent alarms and motion-activated floodlights. When his vehicle approached, the entire coastline was bathed in blinding white light.

"You think you can take my life and just walk away?" he roared, his voice carried by the wind. "I am a creator! I dictate who lives and who dies!"
"You're a man who broke a woman," I said, my voice projecting across the distance, steady and cold. "And you forgot one thing, Julian. You taught me everything about how this empire works. I didn't just take your money; I took your legacy."
