Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Web

At St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the private VIP wing was locked down tighter than a federal vault. Two of Alexander’s private security operatives stood outside Room 402, where Celeste Fontaine lay hooked to a battery of monitors, her stomach pumped and toxicology reports currently spinning in the hospital’s advanced lab.
Alexander sat in the leather armchair by the window, staring at the glowing screen of his iPad.
Marcus walked into the room quietly, holding a secure encrypted laptop.
“The lab results are in, boss,” Marcus said grimly. “A lethal dose of synthetic aconite—wolfsbane. Fast-acting, paralyzing, and virtually undetectable in standard food seasoning once masked by rich chocolate and raspberry reduction. If you had eaten that soufflé, cardiac arrest would have occurred within five minutes.”
Alexander didn't flinch. He had expected nothing less. “And her phone?”
Marcus tapped the keyboard, projecting a series of extracted text messages and encrypted chat logs onto the wall-mounted television screen.
“We cracked her burner phone within twenty minutes of the paramedics leaving the restaurant,” Marcus explained. “She wasn't acting alone, Mr. Sterling. Look at the timestamps.”
Alexander read the messages. The blood in his veins turned to ice.
“Everything is set. Tonight at 9:00 PM. Make it look like natural heart failure,” sent from an encrypted IP address traced to an offshore shell corporation.
And the reply from Celeste’s number just hours before dinner: “Are you sure this won’t trace back to me? His lawyers are thorough.”
The response from the sender—a man whose identity Alexander recognized instantly from the corporate registry:

“Once Sterling Global’s voting shares revert to the co-signer clause in your shared asset agreement, I’ll control the board. You’ll get fifty million and the penthouse. Just make sure he eats the cake.”
The sender was Julian Vance—Alexander’s fiercest corporate rival, a man who had tried for five years to mount a hostile takeover of Sterling Global and failed at every turn. They hadn't just wanted him dead; they had engineered a meticulously crafted legal trap to inherit his entire empire the moment his heart stopped beating.
