Chapter 9 - A New Dawn for Maya
Three weeks later, the bitter chill of the Manhattan winter finally began to yield to the crisp, hopeful warmth of early spring.
In a sunlit, beautifully furnished penthouse apartment on the Upper East Side—completely renovated and deeded directly in their name—Maya sat at a large mahogany desk, sketching with a brand-new set of professional colored pencils.
From the kitchen came the gentle, aromatic scent of simmering chicken soup, cooked by a private chef who ensured her mother received the absolute finest nutrition during her recovery. Her mother was resting comfortably in a quiet, sunlit bedroom down the hall, her health returning stronger with each passing day.
A soft knock echoed at the door.
Maya jumped up and ran to open it.
Alexander stood in the doorway, holding a large, beautifully wrapped box tied with a silver ribbon. He wore a warm, easy smile that the corporate world rarely had the privilege of seeing.
“Mr. Sterling!” Maya brightened, stepping aside to let him in.
“How many times do I have to tell you, Maya? It’s Alexander,” he teased gently, stepping into the foyer and handing her the box.
Maya carefully untied the ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside sat a professional-grade digital drawing tablet, complete with software licenses and a note from the top art academy in New York confirming her full, lifetime scholarship, fully endowed by the Sterling Foundation.
Maya stared at the tablet, her blue eyes shimmering with sudden tears of absolute joy. She looked up at him, her voice barely a whisper. “I... I don't know what to say. This must have cost a fortune.”
