Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Showdown

Up on the forty-fifth floor of Sterling Global headquarters, the tension in the grand mahogany conference room was thick enough to cut with a diamond saw.
Julian Vance sat regally at the head of the long glass table, wearing a tailored navy suit and an insufferable, triumphant smirk. Around him, twelve nervous board members murmured anxiously among themselves.
“Gentlemen, please, quiet down,” Vance announced, raising a hand for silence. “We are all devastated by the tragic news regarding Alexander’s sudden medical crisis. However, business must go on. Under the emergency governance clauses, and with the endorsement of Ms. Fontaine as co-signer, I am formally moving to assume interim control of Sterling Global’s voting shares.”
A murmur of shock rippled through the board. Several members looked ready to object, but Vance’s corporate lawyers towered behind them like stone statues, ready to crush any dissent.
“I call for a vote,” Vance declared, flashing a predatory grin. “All in favor—”
CLACK.
The heavy mahogany double doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding, thunderous crash.
Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.
Walking down the center aisle, stepping with the unassailable, crushing authority of a titan who owned the world beneath his feet, was Alexander Sterling.
He didn't look sick. He didn't look weak. He looked like death incarnate. Every sharp angle of his face was carved in absolute fury, his dark suit immaculate, his silver-streaked hair brushed to perfection.
Julian Vance’s face turned the color of spoiled milk. He gripped the edges of the glass table so hard his knuckles turned white, his mouth hanging open in silent, paralyzed terror.
“A vote?” Alexander’s voice rang out, rich, powerful, and echoing off the vaulted ceiling of the boardroom. “I wasn't aware we were holding an auction for my company, Julian.”
“A-Alexander...” Vance stuttered, stumbling backward out of his chair, his voice cracking. “You... you were supposed to be... the hospital said—”
“The hospital reported a patient recovering from food poisoning,” Alexander interrupted smoothly, stepping right up to the end of the table and placing his hands flat on the glass. “Unfortunately for you, Julian, I don't eat poisoned cake.”
Before Vance could scramble for the door, the side doors of the boardroom opened, and three federal agents accompanied by two white-collar crime investigators marched into the room.
“Julian Vance,” the lead investigator stated loudly, holding up an arrest warrant, “you are under arrest for securities fraud, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit assassination.”
As the cold steel handcuffs snapped around Vance’s wrists, he was hauled backward out of the room, screaming futile threats that vanished into the hum of the Manhattan skyline.

Alexander stood tall at the head of the table, looking out over his stunned board of directors. Not a single person dared to breathe.
“Meeting adjourned,” Alexander said quietly.
