Chapter 4 - The Housekeeper’s Secret

The sun rose over Manhattan in a blaze of cold orange and gold.

By 7:00 AM, news of the previous night’s scandal had been completely scrubbed from social media and mainstream news networks by Moretti PR operatives. To the public, Vanessa Bellini had suffered a sudden "medical emergency" and retired from public life to a private facility in Europe.

In reality, Vanessa was currently sitting in the back of a blacked-out van bound for a secure holding facility in upstate New York, awaiting federal extradition charges for conspiracy and child trafficking.

Inside the master suite of the Moretti estate, Elena stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror.

She was no longer wearing the rough navy linen of a housekeeper. Instead, she wore a tailored silk blouse the color of deep emeralds and cream-colored wide-leg trousers—clothes that had been hand-delivered by luxury stylists at 5:00 AM under Alessandro’s direct orders.

Her chestnut hair was free from its tight bun, cascading in soft waves over her shoulders.

Behind her, Emma was asleep on the massive king-sized bed, snuggled between six goose-down pillows, clutching a plush velvet bear that Alessandro’s chief of staff had personally sourced from FAO Schwarz before dawn.

A knock sounded at the double doors.

Alessandro stepped inside, wearing a dark charcoal bespoke three-piece suit. He looked terrifyingly sharp, his hair slicked back, a dark platinum watch glinting at his wrist.

He stopped when he saw Elena. For a moment, the cold CEO vanished, replaced by a man struck entirely speechless.

“You look… like yourself,” Alessandro murmured, walking toward her.

“I look like a stranger,” Elena corrected softly, looking at her reflection. “For three years, I trained myself to blend into the wallpaper, Alessandro. I made myself invisible so your uncle’s men wouldn't look twice at the girl emptying the trash bins.”

Alessandro stopped inches behind her, his reflection looming over hers in the glass. He smelled of expensive sandalwood, cedar, and crisp ozone.

“You were never invisible to me, Elena,” he admitted quietly.

Elena turned around quickly, her hazel eyes searching his face. “What are you talking about?”

“Three years ago,” Alessandro revealed, his voice dropping an octave. “Before the crash. Before the coma wiped four months of my memory.”

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. “You… you remember?”

“It came back to me last night,” Alessandro whispered, reaching out to lightly trail his knuckles along her jawline. “When I held that baby bracelet in the ballroom. The doctors told me I lost my memory in the accident. But it wasn't the accident that took it, was it? Lorenzo had the clinic administer experimental memory-blocking drugs while I was hooked to the ventilator.”

Elena held her breath, her hand flying to her mouth.

“I remember the storm, Elena,” Alessandro continued, his eyes burning with intense, resurfaced passion. “I remember meeting you at the lake house in Como before the crash. You weren't just a random surrogate chosen from a file. You were the girl sitting by the dock reading poetry, the girl who didn't know who I was when my boat broke down.”

Tears welled in Elena’s eyes. The memory hit her like a tidal wave.

Three years ago, she had met a handsome, mysterious man in Italy while working an internship at an art restoration studio. They had spent three magical, passionate weeks together before he suddenly vanished. A week later, she was snatched off the street by Lorenzo’s men, forced into the surrogate contract under threat of death, and told that the man she loved was a mafia prince who had used her.

“You didn't abandon me,” Elena whispered, her voice breaking.

“Never,” Alessandro swore, stepping so close his chest brushed hers. “Lorenzo orchestrated the crash because he found out I was planning to change my will to include you. He staged the surrogate contract to legally isolate my unborn child while keeping you imprisoned in his network. When you escaped with Emma, he let you live as a servant because he thought it was the ultimate insurance policy.”

Elena pressed her hand against Alessandro’s crisp linen vest. His heart was beating with a heavy, thunderous rhythm beneath her fingers.

“He thought I was weak because I was cleaning his floors,” Elena said, her voice turning to cold iron.

“He was wrong,” Alessandro said, a dark, proud smile touching his lips. “You protected my heir in the dark for three years. Now, it’s my turn to destroy everyone who made you bleed.”

His phone buzzed sharply in his pocket. Alessandro pulled it out, glancing at the caller ID.

“Lorenzo just stepped into the board room at Moretti Tower,” Marcus, his head of security, reported through the earpiece. “He’s calling an emergency vote to strip your executive authority based on last night’s 'instability.'”

Alessandro’s eyes turned to cold steel.

“Tell the board to take their seats,” Alessandro commanded smoothly. “I’m bringing the real chairman with me.”

He looked at Elena, extending his hand toward her.

“Come with me, Elena,” Alessandro said. “It’s time to take back our family.”
